A project of R$ 100 million will deepen the Recife Port channel, increase the draft, and strengthen Pernambuco’s maritime logistics with a start expected by March 2026.
The Port of Recife will undergo a dredging to readjust the waterway infrastructure with an estimated investment of R$ 100 million. The contract was signed this Friday (30th), in Recife, paving the way for the terminal to receive larger ships and operate more efficiently.
The project is considered by the federal government as an important intervention for the logistics of Pernambuco and the Northeast. With the new design of the waterway access, the port complex is expected to gain a minimum depth of 12 meters, as well as better conditions for maneuvers and cargo handling.
According to the Ministry of Ports and Airports, the intervention was also designed to enhance the safety of operations and reduce logistical costs, with a direct impact on the competitiveness of the Pernambuco port.

Ships up to 210 meters enter the route of the Port of Recife
The contract provides for maintenance dredging and readjustment of the waterway access of the port complex, with an operational draft of 10.7 meters, an access channel 240 meters wide, and a maneuvering basin 500 meters in diameter.
In practice, this allows the Port of Recife to operate ships up to 210 meters in length. The advancement tends to increase the terminal’s service capacity and improve cargo handling and other services related to port activity.
The federal government states that the measure strengthens the logistical infrastructure and reinforces the port’s role in the maritime chain of the region.
Project was foreseen in the bid approved in January

The investment of R$ 100 million was already foreseen in the bid approved on January 26, 2026. Of the total, R$ 54.1 million was committed in 2025 and another R$ 45.8 million is planned for 2026.
The start of the works is scheduled for up to March 2026, with completion estimated for May 2027. Until then, the intervention should follow the schedule defined by the Ministry of Ports and Airports as part of the national port infrastructure modernization package.
Federal government and state treat dredging as a project awaited for over ten years
During the signing, Minister Silvio Costa Filho stated that the dredging had been awaited for more than a decade and highlighted the project’s potential to unlock regional development, expand the capacity of Brazilian ports, and generate employment and income.
The governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra, also highlighted the partnership with the federal government to enable structural works in the state. According to her, the intervention strengthens logistics, increases the competitiveness of the ports, and creates conditions for more development.
The Secretary of Economic Development of Pernambuco, Guilherme Cavalcante, said that the project should also improve the operation of cruises and the experience of tourists, in addition to reducing logistical costs and increasing the competitiveness of the terminal.
Port gains importance in cabotage and foreign trade of the Northeast
The dredging of the Port of Recife adds to other structural actions underway in Pernambuco and reinforces the state’s role as a strategic hub for cabotage navigation and foreign trade in the Northeast.
With more depth, an expanded channel, and a maneuvering basin suitable for larger vessels, the terminal now has better conditions to compete for cargo and operations in a market increasingly pressured by efficiency and scale.
