Despite The New Reduction In Diesel Prices, Gasoline Remains Unchanged, Even With Room For Cuts, According To Sector Experts.
Petrobras announced a new reduction in the price of diesel sold to distributors. At the same time, there are many questions about the lack of reduction in the price of gasoline.
As of this Tuesday, the 6th, the price per liter will be cut by R$ 0.16, equivalent to 4.66%. This is the third reduction in just over a month. The measure reignites the discussion about gasoline prices, which remain unchanged.
The state-owned company informed that, since December 2022, the price of diesel has been reduced by R$ 1.22 per liter, accumulating a drop of 27.2%.

The adjustments have followed the downward trend of oil in the international market.
Both Brent and WTI, the two main reference types, were traded below US$ 60 last Monday, the 16th. These prices are the lowest since February 2021.
Gasoline Remains At Same Price
Despite the reduction in diesel, gasoline prices remain the same for distributors.
Petrobras has not announced any changes to this fuel, even with the drop in oil prices.
The different treatment between the two fuels raises doubts about the criteria used by the state-owned company.
According to the Brazilian Association of Fuel Importers (Abicom), gasoline prices in Brazil are 9% above the international parity.
This means there would be room for a reduction of up to R$ 0.26 per liter, if Petrobras followed the logic of parity.
Petrobras Avoids Disclosing Formula
Currently, Petrobras’s pricing policy aims to reflect international prices but does not pass all fluctuations onto consumers.
Even so, the oil company faces criticism for not disclosing a concrete calculation formula. The lack of transparency makes it difficult to predict when and how adjustments will be made.
In recent months, the international oil market has experienced successive declines.
Analysts point to the global economic slowdown and the production increase announced by OPEC as causes, which pressured prices downward.
Diesel Already Has Limited Impact At Pumps
The cut in diesel prices does not guarantee an immediate drop at gas stations.
This is because the passing on depends on factors such as distributor margins, taxes, and the biodiesel blend.
The president of Sincopetro, José Alberto Paiva, stated that gas stations can only pass on the discount if the supplier also lowers prices.
Still, the expectation is for some relief for the consumer. It is estimated that the final price of diesel could drop by up to R$ 0.13 per liter, considering the mix with biodiesel.
Room For Reduction In Gasoline
The depreciation of Brent oil in the last month, which reached 16%, was the main factor that allowed for the new reduction in diesel.
This same trend could justify a cut in gasoline prices.
So far, however, Petrobras has not announced any change in this regard.
The difference between the two fuels, with diesel being reduced and gasoline maintained, is likely to remain at the center of discussions.
