Cooking Gas Prices Hit Historic High in April, Reaching the Highest Value of the Century and the Highest Real Monthly Average
The survey was conducted by the Social Observatory of Petrobras (OSP), an organization linked to the National Federation of Petroleum Workers (FNP). The data from the survey were based on the average monthly price of cooking gas and the average weekly resale values in April, which were released by ANP (National Agency of Petroleum).
According to the disclosed data, it can be seen that in March, the gas had already reached the highest average value of the series in history, being sold for R$ 109.31. Prior to that, another record had been registered in November 2021, with the average gas price of R$ 106.50.
Gas Prices Compromise About 9.4% of the Minimum Wage
The 13kg gas cylinder is sold in Brazil for an average price of R$ 113.48, according to ANP. This represents 9.4% of the minimum wage, the highest price since March 2007, when the cylinder cost R$ 33.06 and the minimum wage was R$ 350.

The Federal Revenue issues a good alert for Brazilian taxpayers: 60.9% are already using the pre-filled tax return, automatic refunds via Pix reach millions, and the government plans for a fully automated income tax in the coming years.
As reported by economist Eric Gil Dantas from the Brazilian Institute of Political and Social Studies (Ibeps), cooking gas is compromising the minimum wage at the same proportion as in 2007. He further states that in the last 15 years, with the maintenance of gas prices and the appreciation of the minimum wage, this proportion has been decreasing, but there was a reversal in 2017 with the rise in cooking gas prices and the real increase of the minimum wage. Moreover, the price of gas is more than double the gas aid provided by the federal government to low-income families. The benefit, which was expected to cover half the price of a cylinder, is now valued at R$ 51, about 44.5% of the average gas price.
According to Broadcast, with the rise in cooking gas prices, an immediate first effect was the increase in the use of firewood by Brazilian families.
According to the economist, between 2013 and 2016, based on data from the Energy Research Company (EPE), the population consumed more cooking gas than firewood; however, from 2017 onward, firewood became more used than cooking gas in households in the country, and by 2020, firewood consumption was already 7% higher than that of gas.
The State of Piauí Has the Highest Average Price of Gas Cylinders in the Northeast
According to ANP, the 13-kilogram gas cylinder has the highest average price in the Northeast region, in Piauí, costing an average of R$ 122.48. The data considered the period from April 17 to 23 of this year, during which 34 points of cooking gas commercialization in the state were surveyed.
Still according to ANP data, the lowest price of gas found in Piauí is R$ 114.00, and the highest price found is R$ 130.00. As reported by entrepreneur Ytla Andrade, who sells food and uses an entire gas cylinder daily, the rise in gas prices is significantly harming entrepreneurs who produce food. Furthermore, Ytla mentioned that she was waiting for a drop in gas prices, and so far, without success. “It’s very heavy on our pockets, right? For those of us who work with bakeries and confectioneries, it’s very difficult. I hope it goes down by next month. We hope for this so that sales improve and it doesn’t fall on the customer’s wallet, so they don’t stop buying,” she said.
