The Mercosur Summit held in Rio de Janeiro was a milestone for Petrobras, which had the opportunity to meet with the Minister of Hydrocarbons of Bolivia to discuss potential alliances and joint projects in the gas, fertilizers, renewable energies, and exploration & production (E&P) segments.

The president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, emphasized the importance of the bilateral meeting, stating that ‘Bolivia can be a strategic partner’ in the gas and energy transition segments, highlighting the continuation of previous meetings with the Bolivian government to address fundamental issues for Petrobras, Brazil, and all of South America. The partnership between the two nations can be beneficial for both sides, resulting in significant advancements in the sector.

This is the third meeting of Prates with the Bolivian government in 2023. In August, the president of Petrobras held the second meeting with the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, to also assess potential alliances and projects during the Amazon Summit in Belém/PA.

The first meeting took place in May and focused on the future of gas and oil exploration in the region, with officials participating in the first meeting of leaders from South American countries, held by the federal government at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasília.

Discussions at the Mercosur Summit

Under Brazil’s Presidency since July of this year, the Mercosur Summit held in Rio de Janeiro addressed trade agreements, such as the one with Singapore, in addition to the promulgation of the Accession Protocol of Bolivia to the group.

The bloc was created in 1991 with the aim of integrating the countries of the region and establishing trade, political, and diplomatic partnerships to expand investments. The group consists of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
