Initiative at Praia do Sono Transforms Residents’ Lives with the Installation of Solar Panels, Boosting Tourism and the Local Economy Sustainably.
An innovative project is changing the reality of the isolated community of Praia do Sono, in Paraty (RJ). Through the installation of a photovoltaic solar energy system, the initiative not only provided clean and reliable electricity for the residents but also opened new income-generating opportunities, strengthening tourism and the local economy.
The Arrival of Clean Energy at Praia do Sono
The Praia do Sono community, accessible only by boat or trail, faced significant challenges due to the lack of access to a conventional power grid. Energy was a scarce and unstable resource, limiting local development and the quality of life for its approximately 400 residents.
The solution arrived sustainably. A project implemented a photovoltaic solar energy system with batteries. This clean energy technology ensures 24-hour electricity supply. The system was installed in the main commercial points of the community, such as guesthouses, restaurants, and bars.

Income Generation and Strengthening of the Local Economy
The arrival of reliable energy had a direct and positive impact on the main economic activity of Praia do Sono: tourism. Local businesses can now offer higher quality service. Establishments can use card machines, freezers, and adequate lighting.
This improvement in infrastructure boosted existing businesses. Additionally, it opened doors for new opportunities. The clean energy allowed residents to invest in their ventures. This resulted in increased income generation for the entire community.
Project Details and Its Partners
The transformation at Praia do Sono was made possible thanks to a partnership. Enel Distribuição Rio, the energy concessionaire, and the startup Insolar, specialized in solar energy solutions, joined forces. The project is part of the Energy Efficiency Program of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).
The total investment in the initiative was R$ 1.5 million. A total of 168 solar panels were installed. The system’s total capacity is 67 kilowatts-peak (kWp). This robust system ensures the community’s energy autonomy.
Sustainability and the Future of the Community
The adoption of clean energy brought benefits that go beyond the economy. The replacement of diesel generators with solar energy significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions. This helps preserve the environment in the Cairuçu Environmental Protection Area, where the beach is located.
The project leaves a sustainability legacy for Praia do Sono. It ensures that tourism and economic development occur in harmony with nature. Future generations will be able to enjoy preserved natural resources.
The Social Impact of Clean Energy in Paraty
Electricity has brought significant improvements in quality of life. Residents report a transformation in daily life. Simple activities, such as preserving food and having nighttime lighting, have become a reality. Energy also benefits education, allowing the use of electronic devices at the local school.
The residents’ perception is of a profound change. The arrival of clean energy not only illuminated homes and businesses but also brought hope and new perspectives for the future of the remote community in Paraty.
