The Company Bought 9 Wind Farms to Compose Its Portfolio. Together, They Have 260.4 Megawatts of Installed Capacity
Owner of 48 plants, 17 hydropower plants, 1 thermal plant, and 30 wind farms, Copel (Companhia Paranaense de Energia) is set to further expand its portfolio. The company acquired the Aventura and Santa Rosa & Mundo Novo wind farms from EDP Renováveis for R$ 1.8 billion.
Together, there will be 9 wind farms in operation, in the municipalities of Touros and São Tomé, in Rio Grande do Norte, with 260.4 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity. The news was announced this week in an interview with the company’s president, Daniel Slaviero, in the Valor Econômico newspaper.
The vast majority of the generated energy, about 76.5%, was acquired through auctions in the regulated environment (ACR), and the other share of 13.7% of the energy is sold in the free market. There are still 9.8% left for new contracts.

Wind Energy in Brazil
Copel Reaches 6.7 GW of Installed Capacity
Currently, Copel has a power generation park with 6.7 GW of installed capacity, including hydropower, thermal, wind, and solar plants. The operation will be carried out by Copel GeT, a subsidiary of the company.
According to Daniel Slaviero, mayor of Curitiba, he emphasized the strategic location of the plants and the importance of acquiring a new operational asset for the business. According to the mayor’s statement, Copel strengthens its presence in Rio Grande do Norte and increases wind energy generation capacity by 28%, reaching 1.2 GW.
“The purchase meets a strategic goal, which is to restore EBITDA with the commercialization of Copel Telecom focused on the energy business. The largest investment plan is at Copel Distribution, but the company has the capacity to make these acquisitions in generation (…) and brings what matters most, which is a double-digit return,” he explains.
Hybrid Energy Generation
According to Cássio Santana da Silva, Business Development Director at Copel, the new plants have a hybrid generation behavior, where more than one source can generate energy in the same location.
“The wind farms are operational, but they have 10 MW of solar projects that Copel will execute at the right time,” he comments.
The next investment will be the sale of 51% of Compagás, the Paraná gas distribution company. Copel also expects to sell the control of the Foz do Areia hydropower plant in the last quarter of 2023. This is a requirement for the concession to be renewed to avoid going to auction.
