The National Electric Energy Agency – Aneel, approved last Thursday the multimillion-dollar investment by Copel in works at the substation in Paraná

Copel – Companhia Paranaense de Energia, announced an investment of 38 million reais in the substation in Guaíra, a municipality located on the border of Brazil with Paraguay and the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. It is expected that the old equipment will be replaced by a new transformer with greater capacity. This change will double the production capacity at the substation and will benefit some regions of the state of Paraná.

Moacir Carlos Bertol, General Director of Copel Geração e Transmissão, said that “Our teams have already started planning this intervention which will be divided into several stages. It is a very important reinforcement for the energy security of Paraná in the coming decades and will also bring benefits to Copel,” he explains. “When we put the renewed substation into operation, we will have an increase of almost R$ 6 million in the Annual Allowed Revenue for Transmission.”

Last Thursday, September 24, Aneel – National Electric Energy Agency, authorized the investment through Resolution No. 9,219. 2024 is the expected time for the completion of the works.

The transformation capacity of the new Guaíra substation was increased from 300 MVA to 600 MVA and will integrate a new transmission trunk planned by the Energy Research Company (EPE), with double circuit lines operating at extra high voltage (525 thousand volts) to connect the Foz do Iguaçu, Guaíra, Sarandi, and Londrina substations.

The biggest advantage of this type of trunk is that even during severe droughts in the South, the energy from Itaipu and energy from the Southeast, the connection point with the substation in Assis in São Paulo, can be used to ensure service across the region. Moreover, this reinforcement in Guaíra will reduce the 765,000 volts grid tension from Itaipu, increasing the reliability of the system in case of accidental disconnection of equipment supplying parts of the state grid.
