According to the Aneel authorization, some distributors will increase the electricity bill, while others will decrease it
The National Electric Energy Agency, Aneel, has authorized nine distributors in Brazil to implement some adjustments in the price of the electricity bill. The authorized increase and decrease by Aneel can reach 32%, depending on the type of consumer, the distributors, and the state in question.
Only two distributors will have to reduce the price charged to customers on electricity bills: Forcel, which serves between 3,900 and 39,500 people in the state of Paraná; and Energia, with 1.5 million customers in Paraíba. Even in these locations, the reduction in the electricity bill authorized by Aneel is not widespread.
In other locations, the electricity bill increases between 0.69% and 31.94% for high voltage customers, between 0.34% and 20.13% for low voltage customers, and between 1.37% and 10.76% for residential electricity bill customers.

In August, Aneel Announced a Reduction in the Electricity Bill for All States for This Month of September
Before the announcement of the increase in electricity bills, the Aneel had declared on Friday, August 26, the application of the green tariff flag for the electricity bill in September. The flag would signal favorable conditions for electricity generation and will be valid for all consumers connected to the National Interconnected System (SIN).
The green tariff flag, which implies a reduction in the electricity bill, has been in effect by Aneel since April 16, after the end of the Water Scarcity flag, a level adopted last year to ensure the supply of electricity. Also on the same day, the National System Operator (ONS) released the forecast for the level of the reservoirs of the SIN subsystems for September.
The estimate is that the Southeast and Midwest will finish the month with 48.5% of the volume, North with 78.8%, Northeast 67.3%, and South 71.8%. It is worth remembering that in June, Aneel approved an increase of up to 60% in additional charges for flags; however, in August, the agency announced another adjustment, this time general, in the prices of the electricity bill in 7 states.
The values will be increased by nearly 32% depending on the supply modality and location. The new adjustment will impact 9 distributors, with the highest increase felt by high tension customers of EFLUL, who will experience an increase of up to 1.94% in their electricity bills.
The Federal Senate has already approved PL 414 of 2021, which alters the regulatory framework of the electricity sector and expands the opening of the free energy market, increasing purchasing power for captive consumers, who currently can only obtain electricity from pre-defined distributors without the option to choose.
With the market opening, the expectation is that there will be a reduction in the electricity bill for consumers. A relief for Brazilians who have seen energy prices soar, with predictions of further increases this year, according to data from Aneel.
