Generic Medications for Hypertension, Like Losartan, Lead Sales in Brazil and Reveal Health Habits and Risks of Self-Medication.
A recent survey by the National Association of Pharmaceutical Laboratories (Alanac) showed that the best-selling generic medications in Brazil are directly linked to chronic diseases such as hypertension. Among the top ten on the list, four are indicated for blood pressure control, including losartan, one of the most prescribed generics in the country.
A hypertension affects approximately 30% of the Brazilian population and can double in people over 60 years old.
This condition, considered silent, often shows no symptoms until it progresses to serious conditions like heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.

A historical discovery in the Andes Mountains reveals a gold deposit valued at 770 billion reais hidden over 4,000 meters above sea level on the border between Chile and Argentina, and the whole world is watching.
Experts highlight that most patients only discover the disease through routine exams or critical events.
According to cardiologist Henrique Trombini from the Heart Institute (Incor), eating habits and sedentary lifestyle have a strong connection with the increase in cases.
“The basis of prevention lies in healthy eating and regular physical activity. Medications like losartan are essential, but they do not replace lifestyle care,” says the cardiologist.
In addition to medications aimed at high blood pressure, there is a significant increase in the consumption of tadalafil, a substance used to treat erectile dysfunction. The medication ranks among the best-sellers in the generic category, alongside sildenafil, which serves the same purpose.
According to doctor Fábio Campos from the São Paulo State Public Servant Hospital, there is a concerning rise in recreational use of these medications by young men.
“Using without a prescription can lead to psychological dependence and cardiovascular risks, especially in those predisposed to heart diseases,” warns the doctor.
The Federal Council of Pharmacy emphasizes that self-medication with tadalafil and similar drugs is a public health problem. In addition to the low price, aggressive marketing and easy availability in pharmacies contribute to usage without proper medical supervision.
The list of best-selling generics also includes simvastatin, used to control cholesterol, and simethicone, indicated for gas relief. Both reflect, according to specialists, the poor quality of the Brazilian diet.
“A diet rich in ultra-processed foods not only elevates blood pressure but also affects cholesterol and digestion. These are preventable diseases with simple changes in daily life,” reinforces Trombini.
The president of Alanac, Henrique Tada, emphasizes that generic medications are approved by Anvisa and meet the same quality standards as brand-name drugs.
“They represent a safe and effective alternative for the continuous treatment of various conditions, especially for those relying on the SUS or the Popular Pharmacy program,” explains Henrique Tada.
By revealing the most consumed medications, the research helps to better understand the public health challenges in the country and reinforces the importance of investing in prevention, health education, and regular medical follow-up.
