Oil Reserves in Brazil Increased in 2023, According to ANP. There Was a 6.98% Growth in Proven Reserves and Record Replacement Rate. Nevertheless, the Country Still Does Not Match Other Nations in Terms of Reserves
In the global oil scenario, Brazil makes its presence known with a significant increase in its reserves, revealed by the Annual Bulletin of Resources and Reserves of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) for the year 2023.
This report highlights not only an increase in proven oil reserves but also offers insights into the national energy landscape and its role in the international market.
Quality of National Oil: Brazil Contributes 3.4% to Global Production
According to data released by ANP, proven oil reserves saw an increase of 6.98% compared to the previous year, totaling 15.894 billion barrels.

China has just discovered oil in rock layers that no one thought could be explored at the bottom of the South China Sea, and the field with over 100 million tons could change the balance of energy power in Asia.
-
Petrobras finds oil on the seabed in the Campos Basin, hundreds of kilometers off the coast of Rio, and the discovery in a deep area raises curiosity about what else may be hidden in the pre-salt and how much this new area could surprise Brazil in the coming years.
-
Petrobras announces a new discovery in the pre-salt layer of the Campos Basin in block C-M-477, 201 km off the coast of Rio and at a depth of 2,984 m, following indications from electrical profiles, gas, and samples collected during drilling.

Even before the first drilling on the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, a wave of migrants is pressuring Oiapoque, expanding precarious occupations and transforming the city of Amapá into the new epicenter of the oil rush in the Amazon.
This growth is accompanied by a 3.81% increase in the volume related to the sum of proven and probable reserves, reaching 22.779 billion barrels.
And a 2.26% increase in the total of proven, probable, and possible reserves, reaching 27.531 billion barrels.
The replacement index of proven oil reserves, which represents the relationship between the appropriated volume and the volume produced during the considered period, reached 183.54%.
This equates to about 2.278 billion barrels in new reserves, a positive indicator for the Brazilian oil industry.
International Scenario: Comparing Brazil’s Oil Reserves with Other Countries
According to geologist and professor Jorge Picanço Figueiredo from the Institute of Geosciences and Petroleum Engineering at the Polytechnic School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), although Brazil is not among the global leaders in proven reserves, its position is still relevant.
Comparatively, countries such as the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, and Venezuela have larger volumes of reserves.
Despite the growth, Brazil’s position in proven reserves is not as significant as that of other countries. Let’s look at some numbers:
- United States: 68.8 billion;
- Russia: 107.8 billion;
- Saudi Arabia: 297 billion;
- Iraq: 145 billion;
- Iran: 157 billion;
- Venezuela: 303 billion.
Figueiredo also emphasizes the quality of Brazilian oil and the country’s high production, which reaches 3.5 million barrels per day.
Of this production, about 1 million barrels daily are exported, contributing significantly to the international market.
However, national consumption is around 2.5 million barrels per day, highlighting a considerable surplus.
Additionally, the professor emphasizes the continued role of oil as the main global energy matrix, predicting that this trend will last for at least another half-century.
The world currently consumes 105 million barrels of oil per day, of which Brazil contributes 3.4%.
