Nikola Tre Electric Truck Can Be Charged in Less Than 2 Hours and Also Has a Hydrogen Cell Version
Nikola and its partner, the IVECO Group, displayed their new super electric truck for heavy-duty service at the Hannover Motor Show, held in Germany. The vehicle features a massive battery totaling 738 kWh of capacity. It is estimated that the range exceeds 530 kilometers. Using 350 kW chargers, it takes just 1 hour and 30 minutes to charge the batteries up to 80% of their capacity.
The version of the Nikola Tre launched in Germany is the European one, already available for orders. The truck is 71 centimeters shorter than the North American model, meaning there is less space for battery storage. The American version has a slightly more powerful set, with 753 kWh. Nikola’s launch makes it a pioneer in the industry: although other manufacturers, such as Mercedes, have announced electric trucks, these will only be available for sale starting in 2024.

Larger than the Toyota Hilux and with a range of 71.9 km/l, the new Jetour F700 PHEV emerges with 1,631 hp, four electric motors, charging from 20% to 80% in 10 minutes, and a size close to the Ram 1500.
The company claims that the Nikola Tre is suitable for regional transport due to its average speed of 70 kilometers per hour and its ability to operate continuously for a maximum of four hours with heavy loads.
In addition to extensive technology, Nikola’s electric truck features a multimedia user interface, with overall vehicle management provided through a 17-inch touchscreen, positioned in the cabin facing the driver’s seat. It also has a 12.4-inch display used to show the instruments.
Nikola Tre Electric Truck Also Has a Hydrogen Cell Equipped Version
Besides the fully electric version of the Nikola Tre, visitors were also able to see a version equipped with a hydrogen cell. This model, however, is undergoing advanced testing and is expected to be available for purchase by 2024. Nikola stated that a refill of 70 kg of hydrogen, which takes about 20 minutes, allows a range of approximately 800 kilometers.
The hydrogen variant has even higher levels of technology and complexity. As the catalytic conversion systems for energy generation have very specific requirements for aerodynamics and cooling, the design is fundamentally different from the 100% electric version. However, the power and performance are the same. Only the range is greater, due to the difference in fuels.
