The Iconic Overpass, Known as the “Largest Pool Table in the World”, Was Abandoned for Years, but a Turnaround Promises to Change This Story!

When you think of an important road, many factors come to mind: access, traffic, safety, and of course, the need for modern infrastructure to support growth.

The case of SC-415, in São Francisco do Sul, is a clear example of how a simple stretch of road can impact an entire region.

Known for its importance to the flow of tourists and residents, the highway is also the stage for a duplication project that finally seems to be coming to life after years of waiting and controversies.

The famous “largest pool table in the world” – an unfinished overpass that has become a symbol of the delays in construction – may be close to being completed, and the duplication of the road, which seems to have been on paper for a long time, may now become a reality.

Stalled Construction and a New Hope for SC-415

Recently, a turnaround in the SC-415 construction brought good news for drivers facing heavy traffic in the region.

The engineering project for the expansion of the SC-415 stretch, which extends for 10 kilometers between the intersection with BR-280 and access to Capri, has finally been authorized by the State Department of Infrastructure.

The construction for the duplication of the highway, which is directly connected to the increase in capacity of BR-280, aims to resolve the traffic bottleneck affecting São Francisco do Sul island, one of the most important tourist destinations in Santa Catarina.

With the duplication of BR-280 underway, SC-415, which is the main route to the island, would become a critical point without significant improvements.

The duplication project for SC-415 has long been a demand from the local population, which had already faced frequent congestion on the road.

The expansion of the state highway is even more urgent with the progress of the BR-280 works, a federal highway that connects the city of Joinville to São Francisco do Sul and, when duplicated, will require an increase in traffic capacity on the state highway leading to São Francisco beaches.

As stated in the notice from the State Department of Infrastructure, “with the duplication of BR-280 in progress, there will be a ‘bottleneck’ of vehicle traffic accessing SC-415 if the state highway continues with its current infrastructure”.

Unfinished Overpass: The Symbol of Delays in Construction

Another element that marked the delay in construction of SC-415 was the famous unfinished overpass, ironically and pejoratively known as the “largest pool table in the world”.

Built as part of the railway bypass of São Francisco do Sul, the overpass was started by DNIT (National Department of Transportation Infrastructure) in 2009, but its construction was halted in 2011 when a project review was needed.

Since then, the project remained stagnant, generating criticism and frustration among the local population, who viewed the incomplete structure as a symbol of neglect towards local infrastructure.

The overpass, which was supposed to ease traffic in the city, became a permanent obstacle for residents and tourists in the region.

The continuation of this project, however, depends directly on the resumption of the railway bypass works in São Francisco do Sul.

The bidding launched at the end of 2023 to complete the overpass was canceled, but a new version of the bidding process will be published soon, offering new hope for the structure to finally be completed.

Duplication Project May Include New Traffic Solutions

The duplication project for SC-415, which is now underway, forecasts various guidelines to improve traffic in the region.

The restoration of the highway and the increase of its capacity are the main goals of the expansion, but the project may also include an analysis of the possibility of creating a new road in the area, such as a bypass to the state highway.

According to the notice, the goal is to ensure that the increase in vehicle flow, especially with the duplication of BR-280, does not cause congestion on SC-415, directly impacting residents and tourists traveling to the beaches of São Francisco do Sul.

The bidding for the duplication project was held in 2022, but the process underwent legal disputes, which delayed the progress of the works.

However, after the necessary adjustments, the resumption of the project took place last year, and now the expectation is that the duplication of the highway will be completed within 12 months. The estimated cost for the execution of the works is approximately R$ 600 thousand.

High Cost, but Urgent Need for the City’s Future

The completion of the SC-415 duplication project is crucial for the future viability of traffic in the region.

With the increased capacity of BR-280, traffic on SC-415, which was already heavy, is expected to grow even more, requiring a robust solution to avoid congestion affecting both local residents and tourists visiting the beaches.

The expansion of the highway, which was already a long-standing demand from the population, now gains renewed urgency with the increase in vehicle flow due to the duplication of the federal highway.

The cost of the duplication works, estimated at R$ 600 thousand, reflects the importance of infrastructure for the development of the region.

São Francisco do Sul is one of the largest tourist hubs in the state of Santa Catarina, and improving access to the island will not only benefit residents but also contribute to strengthening local tourism, which is an important source of income for the city’s economy.

Return of Works: What to Expect for the Future of SC-415?

The future of SC-415 now seems more promising with the resumption of duplication works and the continuation of the overpass project.

The expansion of the highway and the completion of the railway bypass are essential to ensure that the city’s infrastructure keeps pace with the growing demand for transportation.

With the resumption of construction and the release of new investments, the city now has a great opportunity to modernize its roads and improve the quality of life for its residents and visitors.

The expectation is that, within the next few years, SC-415 will not only become a safer and more efficient highway but also that the famous overpass, which for so long symbolized delays in construction, will finally be completed, eliminating one of the biggest bottlenecks in the city’s traffic.

With the completion of the duplication, drivers will have a faster and safer access, and tourists will have a more pleasant travel experience, contributing to the continuous growth of São Francisco do Sul as an excellent tourist destination.
