The Mogi-Bertioga SP Highway Is One of the Main Access Routes Between The North Coast of São Paulo and The Interior of The State. However, Due to The Heavy Rains That Hit The Region Last Weekend, It Was Completely Closed at Km 82.
According to the Secretary of Environmental, Infrastructure and Logistics of The State of São Paulo, Natália Resende, it will take at least 6 months for the complete reconstruction of the highway. In the meantime, drivers will need to detour to the Anchieta-Imigrantes system and the Tamoios highway as an alternative.
The government estimates that the repair works on the Mogi-Bertioga SP Highway will cost around R$ 9.4 million. Recovery services have already begun, and in 2 months of work, it will be possible to partially reopen the road. The remaining work includes building a new retaining wall, reinforcing the existing wall, and creating a new drainage system.
However, in addition to these extremely important technical services for the safety of users of this important route, other measures are also necessary to minimize the damage caused by the heavy rains. Therefore, it is essential to adopt preventive measures to avoid situations like this from happening so frequently in the region.

Coastal Rains in São Paulo
On the morning of Tuesday (Feb. 21, 2023), the President of The Republic and government ministers were in the municipality of São Sebastião, on the north coast of São Paulo, to closely monitor the heavy rains that hit the region last week and caused 41 deaths, including a 9-month-old child and another 7-year-old. In total, 1,730 people needed to be displaced and 766 were left homeless.
During an aerial survey conducted by the mayor of São Sebastião, Felipe Augusto (PSDB), and the governor of the State, Tarcísio De Freitas (Republicans), Lula announced several measures to minimize the damage caused by the heavy rains in the region. Among them, the use of aircraft to assist in transporting firefighters to areas isolated by the heavy rainfall.
As a result, the state of public calamity requested by the federal government was promptly recognized. Consequently, several emergency services were activated to aid in the recovery of the affected area: rescue teams working 24 hours a day in flooded areas; health professionals conducting home visits; free food distribution; and reduced-interest bank loans for low-income families affected by the disaster.
The president also committed to sending more resources to The State and encouraged residents to unite in a collective effort to build new solutions together with municipal and state entities affected by the tragedy.
