Ceitec, A Brazilian Factory That Produces Chips and Semiconductors, Has Been Inactive for Years. Upon Taking Office as President of the Republic, Lula Ordered That the Current Situation of the Space Be Investigated to Consider the Next Steps.
Ceitec, the National Center for Advanced Electronic Technology, was revisited by President Lula after being inactive for a period. The factory deals with chips and semiconductors, which are of great relevance to the country, especially regarding the production of knowledge in the field. Until now, the President’s directives are to analyze the current situation of the factory and, from that, think of the best ways to restore Ceitec’s full operation.
Ceitec Is a Reference in the Area of Chips and Semiconductors. If Lula Reactivates the Factory, It Could Highlight Brazil in the Technology Field Among Other Latin American Countries
The Center is the only developer and manufacturer of chips and semiconductors in all of Latin America, having such great relevance in the technology field and empowering Brazil, serving as a reference country.
The initiative of President Lula was to initially create a group to develop possible strategies aiming at the expansion of Ceitec in the semiconductor development segment.

Toyota surprises the automotive world by planning three new factories and initiating an industrial expansion that could redefine its global production in the coming years.
The idea is for the objective to be broadened to a national level, enabling different regions of Brazil to engage in the field.
The MCTI, the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, is responsible for leading the project and conducting a complete survey of the current situation of the factory, as well as the options available at this initial moment of reactivation.
Further details regarding the initiative have not yet been disclosed, including the names involved in the project or the timelines set for the publication of results.
The reactivation of Ceitec comes after a privatization attempt promoted by former President of the Republic, Jair Messias Bolsonaro. However, no agency was willing to buy it.
In response, the government attempted to initiate a liquidation process, but the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) intervened to prevent the initiative from continuing.
The latest updates involving Ceitec, mentioned earlier, date back to 2021.
Investing in Ceitec Is a Decision That Could Attract Profits for Brazil, Besides Also Supplying the Internal Market with Necessary Materials for Trade
The lack of investments in Ceitec has already been felt in Brazil, as reinforced by Anfavea, the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers.
According to the agency, the production of smartphones, airplanes, and automobiles, for example, was forced to stop due to the lack of electronic components, something that could have been avoided by Ceitec itself.
In quantitative terms, this forced pause due to a lack of materials caused Brazil to stop producing more than 300,000 vehicles in 2021.
To prevent the same thing from happening, Ceitec has returned to the government’s agenda through a proposal made by the Working Group on Science and Technology, coordinated by Aloizio Mercadante, the current president of the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES).
In his speech, he said: “This is the choice that Brazil must make: whether it wants to have dominance, whether it wants to prepare itself, whether it wants to attract investments, whether it wants to join the elite of countries that produce chips and are at the forefront of information technology, we will have to invest.”
In addition, he also added when addressing the issue at a global level, positioning the country as the center of great achievements: “[Brazil] can be a great option in the semiconductor industry for creating new technological centers.”
The creation of the group to investigate Ceitec is a way for President Lula to demonstrate that he accepted the suggestions given by experts. The current situation of the chip and semiconductor factory should be disclosed soon, along with the next steps planned for it.
