Sweden strengthens its naval capabilities in the Baltic Sea with new order for lightweight torpedoes and launcher systems from Saab.
Amid the increasingly tense geopolitical scenario in northern Europe, Sweden has taken another significant step in modernizing its defense naval. The country has signed a new contract with Swedish manufacturer Saab for the supply of lightweight torpedoes of the Torpedo 47 model, as well as launch tubes, training systems and technical support. The value of the agreement is around 1,3 billion Swedish kronor — the equivalent of around R$625 million.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026, reinforcing the Swedish government's efforts to increase its military readiness to face potential threats in the Baltic Sea, especially after regional instability heightened by the war in Ukraine.
Torpedo 47: precision and versatility in underwater combat
Developed by Saab specifically for the complex conditions of the Baltic Sea, the Saab Lightweight Torpedo (SLWT), or Torpedo 47, is a state-of-the-art weapon with versatile application.

It was designed to be launched from submarines, surface vessels and, in the future, helicopters, which ensures greater adaptability in strategic naval missions.
In addition to its navigation and combat capabilities in shallow waters and challenging seabeds, the system stands out for its onboard detection and guidance technology, ideal for operations in scenarios with irregular underwater topography.
New order expands fleet started in 2016
This is the second acquisition of Torpedo 47 by the Swedish Armed Forces.
The first took place in 2016, with deliveries starting six years later, in 2022.
A new purchase significantly expands the stock of this weapon and also includes spare parts and continuous support structure, which ensures maintenance and operational availability over time.
Saab enters into strategic partnership with Swedish government
Mats Wicksell, Director of Saab’s Kockums division, highlighted the company’s pride in participating in strengthening national defence:
“We are proud to continue supporting Sweden in its efforts to modernize underwater weapons systems to protect the Baltic Sea region. Torpedo 47 provides advanced navigation, detection and combat capabilities in complex maritime environments.”
The contract with Saab is part of a broader military strategy adopted by Sweden to enhance its deterrence capabilities and better prepare for potential confrontations in the maritime environment.
The Baltic region, where strategic routes and interests of NATO countries and Russia are concentrated, has become more relevant for European defense in recent years.
