New Electronic Tolls Are Coming to São Paulo! Automatic Billing, Varied Fees, and Hefty Fines for Those Who Do Not Pay!
The state of São Paulo is undergoing a wide modernization of the toll system, with the implementation of new electronic plazas in a free flow model.
The technology promises to reduce queues, speed up traffic, and make trips more efficient for drivers in São Paulo.
Currently, only three gantries of this type are in operation, but the forecast is that this number will grow exponentially in the coming years.

Goodbye traditional minivans: the giant “Chinese Kombi” from Leapmotor arrives in stores with 5.28 meters, a battery of up to 115 kWh, and an electric version with a range of 720 km to transform the family car into an executive lounge on wheels in China.
More Than 20 New Gantries Will Be Installed on Highways
The expansion project of electronic tolls will be conducted by several concessionaires, such as EcoNoroeste, SPSerra, Novo Litoral, Ecovias Raposo Castello, and CCR Sorocabana.
CCR Sorocabana leads the initiative, with 23 new structures planned, eight of which will be operational by the end of 2025.
Among the confirmed installations, one of the most impactful gantries will be located in the northern stretch of the Rodoanel Mário Covas, one of the busiest roads in the state.
How the Free Flow Toll Works
Unlike traditional tolls, the free flow system eliminates the need for toll booths, as it uses sensors and cameras to record vehicle passage and automatically charge the fee.
This technology allows drivers to travel without interruptions, reducing congestion and improving traffic flow.
Another difference is that the fee is proportional to the distance traveled.
In the Sorocabana Route region, fees can range between R$ 0.83 and R$ 12.20, while on Nova Raposo, costs range from R$ 0.54 to R$ 4.84.
Discounts for Frequent Drivers
One of the main advantages of the new system is the possibility of discounts for drivers who regularly use the highways.
The Frequent User Discount Program (DUF) offers:
- 10% discount from the 11th passage in the month;
- 20% discount from the 21st passage;
- 5% additional discount for those using automatic payment tags.
Drivers can pay the fees through apps, concessionaires’ websites, or the National Traffic Wallet app.
Penalties for Not Paying the Toll
Although the system facilitates passage and payment, drivers who do not settle the fee will be subject to penalties.
According to current legislation, failure to pay the toll may result in:
- Fine of R$ 195.23;
- Loss of 5 points on the driver’s license;
- Charging of interest and late fees for delays.
Road Modernization and Future Impacts
The expansion of the free flow system is part of a larger strategy for modernizing São Paulo’s highways.
According to experts, this technology can significantly contribute to reducing travel time, minimizing congestion, and improving safety on roads.
Furthermore, the digitalization of tolls also facilitates enforcement and reduces operating costs for concessionaires, which may allow for future fare reductions.
With the implementation of this new model, drivers should stay aware of the need to keep payments up to date and monitor concessionaire updates to avoid unexpected charges or fines.
How to Register for Toll Payments
Drivers interested in using the free flow tolls without complications must register in the concessionaires’ systems or in the Digital Traffic Wallet app.
The process is simple and allows for automatic payment, ensuring that discounts are applied correctly.
