Initiative Took Place at the Nave do Engenhão and Aims to Stimulate Future Generations Dreaming of Working in the Video Game Industry
The Municipal Secretariat of Science and Technology (SMCT) held a meeting between 100 professionals working in game development from 10 countries across the globe, covering various sectors in the industry, and over 100 students from municipal schools who dream of entering this universe and building a professional career. The meeting, which also included the presence of three NGOs from the Rocinha Community (Lutando Para Crescer, Vivendo um Sonho Surf, and Tio Lino), took place last Friday (07/01) at the Nave do Conhecimento do Engenhão. The professionals are participants of GameJamPlus, the world’s largest competitive game development marathon aimed at turning games into businesses.
The City Hall of Rio, through SMCT, launched last month the Coordinator of Games and E-sports, the first body in Brazil dedicated to the gaming sector. The objective of this Coordinator is to seek returns for the city in various areas such as tourism, revenue, social development, education, entertainment, new careers, and job market opportunities, as well as to stimulate the entire gaming industry and its ecosystem.

– We need to promote initiatives like this and turn Rio into the hub for the gaming sector in the country. It’s an industry that currently earns more than both cinema and music combined. Our role is to create public policies that provide new opportunities for our youth – emphasized Willian Coelho, municipal secretary of Science and Technology.

Video games should not be seen merely as entertainment. They function as an important tool for social and educational inclusion, as they stimulate creativity, memory, and attention among practitioners.
– We have always had the mission to democratize the universe of games, in addition to training talents around the world. We want children and teenagers who already have the desire to work with games to know that this universe is much larger than they imagine. And the Nave do Conhecimento space is ideal for that – explains Ian Rochlin, CEO of GameJamPlus.
The initiatives are already bearing fruit. Matheus Valério, 12 years old, was one of the highlights of the free Game Development course offered at the Nave do Conhecimento do Engenhão. Along with his classmates, he created a game and envisions future professionalization and a chance to work in the video game sector as a Game Developer and Game Designer.
– I have always wanted to work in game development. Through the course at Nave do Conhecimento, I was able to discover tools that I had never seen before, such as the intuitive panel. Video games are not just fun. They can give me a future – said the student, a resident of Engenho Novo.
