According to information from the coordinator of the Southern Region of the National Union of Aviation Workers (SNA), Patrícia Gomes, over a thousand workers have already been laid off across the country in a process that began last week.

According to the Union, there have been layoffs in Vitória, Goiânia, Rio, and Salvador, some of which were done over the phone. Patrícia also stated that with these measures, the company will cease operations at 27 bases of small airports across the country.

Azul did not confirm the total number of layoffs and stated in a release that it continues to seek solutions to face the crisis caused by the pandemic of the new coronavirus.

Azul reported that the COVID-19 crisis has affected businesses worldwide, especially airlines, and that, like all companies in the sector, it is seeking solutions to face the challenges, which include the preservation of its crew’s jobs.

Azul has a voluntary resignation plan, but according to the president of the National Federation of Civil Aviation Workers, Sérgio Dias, the initiative is not being well-received by employees, and this could lead to targeted layoffs.

Before the pandemic, Azul operated approximately 900 daily flights, but now it is only 250, even on peak days. The company’s forecast is to operate at just 35% of its capacity from before the quarantine in August. The company is negotiating a loan with BNDES to help it through this turbulent time.
