China modernizes the oldest metro line in Mexico City, taking on the renovation of 18.83 km, 20 stations, new trains, signaling, and maintenance for 19 years in one of the most crowded systems in Latin America.
The meeting took place in Brasília during the National Forum of State Secretaries of Planning and served for the Bahia representatives to present a new Strategic Plan for the railway sector.
The document was developed by Seplan in partnership with CBPM and the Dom Cabral Foundation, aiming to boost the segment over the next few years with the support of the Federal Government.
The document proposes the construction of new railway sections, modernization of existing ones, and the integration of networks with ports and intermodal terminals. The goal is to expand and modernize the railway network in the region, which has great potential for transporting minerals, grains, and other cargo.
According to the Strategic Plan of the organizations, the biggest challenge for the railway sector currently is the lack of good logistics for operations. The state of Bahia is one of the largest mineral producers in the country.
With the development of new railways and the improvement of those already in place, the transportation of products produced in the area can become increasingly efficient.
Thus, the support of the Federal Government is highly necessary for Seplan and CBPM with the new plan.
State Department and CBPM Believe That Lula’s New Mandate in the Federal Government Can Contribute to the Adoption of the Developed Strategic Plan
The Planning Secretary, Cláudio Peixoto, commented that the arrival of a new team in the Federal Government could put Bahia back in the spotlight for investments in the railway sector.
“We are updating our long and medium-term planning instruments, which are the PDI — Integrated Development Plan Bahia 2035 and the PPA — Multi-Year Investment Plan (2024 – 2027), and this alignment of agendas and projects with the federal government is essential, especially in the area of railway infrastructure and other transport modalities for the development of the Bahian economy, making it more competitive and therefore attractive to investors,” he said.
In addition to the construction of new railways, the document from Seplan and CBPM also proposes the integration of railways with ports and intermodal terminals.
For this purpose, works such as the construction of new railway branches, the expansion of maneuvering yards, and the construction of new cargo terminals are planned.
The Strategic Plan for the railway sector in Bahia will now be evaluated by the Federal Government, which will define whether it will happen and when it will be possible.
