Cargo Transportation Sets Record in Brazil: The Largest and Heaviest Load Ever Transported for Petrobras
Recently, cargo transportation in Brazil reached a new level of complexity and magnitude. A mega operation involved seven trucks to move a gigantic piece weighing over 500 tons for Petrobras.
This load, which many consider the largest and heaviest ever transported in Brazil, covered an impressive route that involved various logistical and engineering challenges.
Colossal Reactor in Giant Cargo Transport for Petrobras
The item in question was a colossal reactor, part of a total of 13 pieces, transported in 2013 to Petrobras’s fertilizer plant in Três Lagoas. After leaving China, the reactor arrived at the port of Rio Grande in Rio Grande do Sul, traveled to Mar del Plata in Argentina, moved up the river to the Itaipu plant in Foz do Iguaçu, and was finally taken to its final destination in Três Lagoas. During this journey, high-voltage wires were raised and traffic was interrupted, drawing the attention of many local residents.

A viaduct over 40 years old in a city in Minas Gerais was closed due to the risk of collapse, blocked routes for months, exposed maintenance failures, and now requires a R$ 1.7 million project to prevent a collapse in the urban heart for decades.
To carry out this complex cargo transportation operation, Petrobras relied on support from various specialized companies. The company responsible for planning and executing the transport was Transdata, known for its expertise in logistics and special cargo transportation. Additionally, Eletronorte collaborated in raising the high-voltage wires to allow for the safe passage of the reactor.
Road Transportation

The road transport of this reactor by Transdata was a true spectacle. Moved on a platform with 180 tires and remote control, the reactor advanced at an average speed of 5 km/h. Each piece took about eight days to be moved, requiring rigorous strategic planning to minimize risks and ensure safety on the roads.
This special cargo transportation operation is not an isolated event in Brazil. On another occasion, a chamfering machine, used for shaping steel parts, was transported from Espírito Santo to Minas Gerais, weighing an impressive 654 tons and measuring 111 meters in length. This road transport required a 25-day journey and four months of prior studies, demonstrating the complexity and preparation needed to move such extraordinary loads.
These examples show how transporting indivisible and special cargo in Brazil is a task that requires precise coordination, advanced technological resources, and a highly skilled team. With each new challenge, the country excels in logistics and road transportation, overcoming barriers and setting new records.
