Brazil Has Seven SUS Hospitals Among The Best In The World, Including Hospital Das Clínicas, Hospital São Paulo, And Sírio-Libanês.

Brazil stands out in the international medical scene with 22 hospitals included in the list of the best in the world in 2026, according to the American magazine Newsweek. Among them, seven public SUS institutions, such as Hospital das Clínicas da Unicamp and Hospital São Paulo da Unifesp, demonstrate that excellence in public health can compete with renowned private hospitals, including Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein and Hospital Sírio-Libanês.

The survey evaluated hospitals globally between May and July 2025, considering recommendations from health professionals, accreditations, certifications, and patient satisfaction indicators.

The inclusion of SUS hospitals in the ranking highlights the advancement of Brazilian public health, especially in complex specialties such as cardiology, oncology, and neurosurgery.

“PROMs allow for the real effectiveness of medical care to be assessed from the patient’s perspective”, explains the magazine, highlighting the importance of indicators that measure quality of life and satisfaction with treatment.

Detailed Methodology Evaluates Hospital Performance

The Newsweek ranking, developed in partnership with the global research firm Statista, analyzed 12 medical specialties, including pediatrics, cardiac surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, urology, and orthopedics.

For some areas, such as cardiology and oncology, the top 300 hospitals were considered; for neurosurgery and urology, the top 125.

The research combined three main criteria: recommendations from health professionals, accreditation and certification data, and results from the Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) Implementation Survey.

This method ensures a comprehensive assessment based not only on infrastructure and technology but also on patients’ perceptions of the effectiveness of treatments.

Public SUS Hospitals That Stand Out Globally

Among the publicly recognized hospitals internationally, the following stand out:

Hospital das Clínicas da Unicamp – Campinas;

Hospital das Clínicas da USP – São Paulo;

Hospital de Ensino da UNIFESP – São Paulo (Hospital São Paulo);

Hospital Municipal Infantil Menino Jesus – São Paulo;

Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia – São Paulo;

Instituto do Coração (InCor) – São Paulo;

INTO – Instituto Nacional de Traumatologia e Ortopedia Jamil Haddad – Rio de Janeiro.

These hospitals are national references in high-complexity public care, offering cutting-edge services in various medical specialties.

Private and Philanthropic Hospitals Partnering with SUS

In addition to public hospitals, private and philanthropic hospitals also made the list. Some have partnerships with SUS, increasing public access to high-quality services:

Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein – São Paulo;

Hospital Sírio-Libanês – São Paulo;

A.C. Camargo Cancer Center – São Paulo;

BP – A Beneficência Portuguesa – São Paulo;

Hospital do GRAACC – São Paulo (focused on childhood cancer);

HCor – Hospital do Coração – São Paulo;

Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz – São Paulo.

According to specialists, these institutions combine advanced technology, highly qualified teams, and humanized care, consolidating Brazil as a global medical reference.

Impact on the Brazilian Healthcare System

The presence of SUS and private hospitals with partnerships on the list reinforces the importance of investing in public health and integrating with private hospitals.

“This international visibility demonstrates that SUS offers high-quality services, comparable to the best hospitals in the world”, claims Newsweek.

Additionally, the ranking helps identify successful medical practices, promoting continuous improvements in patient care and encouraging more efficient public health policies.
