The Shell FPSO Will Be Taken to a Recycling Facility Designed for the Vessel and Approved by the European Union

Shell contracted the Danish company Modern American Recycling Services Europe (MARS) to carry out the sustainable recycling of its floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) “Fluminense”, which operated for 20 years in the Bijupirá and Salema oil fields in the Campos Basin. MARS is a European Union-approved recycling facility that was selected last year to dismantle other FPSOs. It is expected that Shell’s vessel will arrive at MARS Europe in Frederikshavn, northern Denmark, in 2024, after obtaining the necessary approvals in compliance with local and international regulations, according to the Portos e Navios website.

Operating History of the FPSO “Fluminense”

Modec was responsible for converting the Shell FPSO “Fluminense” from an ULCC tanker, as well as operating and maintaining the vessel. With the capacity to process 81,000 bopd and compress 75m cfd of natural gas, the FPSO was used by Shell for two decades in the Bijupirá and Salema oil fields in the Campos Basin. However, the decision was made to scrap the vessel due to its age and obsolescence.

Green and Sustainable Recycling of FPSOs

The “green” recycling of the FPSO vessel is a process that aims to minimize the environmental impacts of removing obsolete ships from service, reducing waste and maximizing recycling potential. MARS is a European Union-approved recycling facility that focuses on ensuring that ship recycling is carried out safely, sustainably, and in compliance with international regulations. With Shell contracting MARS, the recycling of the FPSO “Fluminense” will be carried out in a more responsible and sustainable manner.

Impact of Shell’s FPSO Scrap on the Energy Sector

The scrap from FPSOs of Shell and other companies is a growing problem in the energy sector, as the average age of the vessel is around 20 years, and many of them are approaching the end of their useful life. The removal and recycling of the vessel require the adoption of responsible and sustainable measures to ensure that the environment is not negatively affected. Shell’s contracting of MARS to recycle the FPSO “Fluminense” is a demonstration of the energy sector’s commitment to adopting more responsible and sustainable practices to deal with FPSO scrap.
