Brazilian biotechnology startup, TerraMares, has been developing promising technology for the production of green hydrogen, which has aroused interest in other countries.

The company was founded in 2019 by two oceanologists and an oceanography intern and has its base of operations in the laboratories of Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG).

Using the cultivation of microalgae, TerraMares transformed research that used microalgae to provide inputs to the field into a recognized technology in several countries. The company offers bioinputs or bioenergy according to the needs of each sector.

For inputs, it uses waste from companies and landfills to feed the microalgae. In the case of bioenergy, the use of the main raw material is different. The main types of companies served by the biotechnology are sanitation, fertilizers, chemical industries and agribusiness cooperatives.

With the acceleration of the Green Hydrogen Program, the startup is also developing a pilot project to produce bioenergy from microalgae, with industrial bioreactors that enable the generation of green hydrogen. According to oceanologist Victor Brian Lopes Magalhães, TerraMares is one of the only companies that works with green hydrogen.

Green hydrogen is a promising source of green energy, being produced through renewable sources such as biomass, wind and solar.

Produced without the use of fossil fuels, hydrogen is considered an important chemical compound to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change. The research in green hydrogen are part of the Green Hydrogen Innovation Program launched by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) in December 2021.

In addition to collaborating to reduce gas emissions, the technology developed by TerraMares also cooperates to reduce the environmental impacts of the use of fossil fuels in industry. The startup is one of the pioneers in biotechnology production of microalgae and demonstrates the importance of entrepreneurial and innovative initiatives in the environmental sector.

The company is proof that it is possible to transform scientific research ideas into an innovative startup, working in highly complex research and using cutting-edge technology to ensure the creation of sustainable products with the potential to positively impact the environment.

For oceanologist Victor Brian Lopes Magalhães, the results obtained from research into the production of green hydrogen are promising

He points out that TerraMares is being accelerated by the Green Hydrogen Innovation Program, which demonstrates its relevance in the market. With its technology, the startup stands out in the biotechnology sector, highlighting the importance of entrepreneurial and innovative initiatives in the environment sector.

TerraMares has been working on partnership with other companies and industries, developing products according to the needs of each sector. With that, the startup closes a proof of concept and, with that, invests on a larger scale, specifically for the model that is already in the industry. The use of microalgae technology to produce green hydrogen can be a promising solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for developing more sustainable products.

The search in green hydrogen is an opportunity for innovative companies to stand out in the market with sustainable and less polluting solutions. The technology developed by TerraMares for the production of green hydrogen can be an important solution to the environmental impacts caused by the industry. The startup is an example of entrepreneurship and innovation, with technology that can positively impact the environment and help create a more sustainable future for everyone.
