Submarine Tonelero (S-42) of the Brazilian Navy Is Now in Testing and Promises to Revolutionize Brazilian Sovereignty and Innovate the Technology of the Brazilian Armed Forces, check out the details!
The Tonelero S-42 submarine, the third of four other traditional propulsion models built by the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB) for the Brazilian Navy, has reached a key milestone in its trajectory. Since Wednesday, November 27, the armed forces submarine began its first independent surface navigation without the support of tugboats in the Sepetiba Bay.
Testing of the Tonelero Submarine of the Brazilian Navy
This stage, which marks the technological advancement of the Brazilian Navy, will be conducted over five days and plays a strategic role in national defense.
During this operational test of the Tonelero submarine (S 42), the vessel will demonstrate the efficiency of its own propulsion, performing a set of essential checks to strengthen its military and operational capability.

Students drop out of ESA after reports of sergeants driving for Uber, and a silent crisis in the Armed Forces begins to worry candidates in 2026
The return to the Construction Yard (ESC) is scheduled for this Sunday, December 1, after the strict fulfillment of the planned activities. In this critical stage, the Tonelero submarine (S 42) of the armed forces will have its crew engaged in a series of activities to evaluate the performance of essential systems such as propulsion, navigation, command, and battery charging.
These data are crucial to prepare the submarine for its first Dynamic Immersion, which is set to take place at the end of January next year. Additional tests on combat, communication, and cooling systems will be reserved to ensure the full functionality of the equipment before its next outing to sea.
This technical rigor reflects the commitment of the Brazilian Navy to maintain the readiness of its Armed Forces, ensuring submerged operations for up to five days with total safety and efficiency.
Submarine Tonelero S-42 Will Be the Closest to Full Operation
The execution of these tests underscores the strategic role of the PROSUB in updating Brazil’s military defense capacity, placing the country’s armed forces among the leading maritime powers in the world. With the completion of this phase, the Tonelero submarine (S-42) will be closest to achieving full operation and integration into the Brazilian Navy’s Submarine Force Command.
In the coming months, the focus will be on the adjustment and optimization of systems, preparing for challenging missions that consolidate the Armed Forces and national defense.
According to José de Andrade Silva e Neto, Marine Departures Leader at ICN and former submariner, the “J9” milestone represents important progress in the Tonelero submarine (S-42) project. By demonstrating its capacity for independent navigation and successfully conducting multiple tests, the submarine proves the excellence of its construction and the competence of the team involved.
All About the New Submarine of the Armed Forces
With a length of 71.62 meters, a diameter of 6.2 meters, and a height of 15 m, the Tonelero is the 5th submarine of the Brazilian Fleet and the 3rd with diesel-electric propulsion built entirely in Brazil.
The vessel has a displacement capacity of 1,870 tons and can operate for up to 70 days. The submarine was designed to exceed a depth of 250 meters and reach a maximum speed of 37 km/h.
Inside, the Tonelero submarine (S 42) can transport up to 35 people. Its current crew consists of 27 enlisted personnel and 8 Navy officers. The submarine features two hatches and is divided into 17 main compartments.
The new equipment of the Brazilian Armed Forces will be equipped with 6 weapon turrets capable of launching torpedoes, anti-ship missiles, and mines. The submarine’s Combat System also includes acoustic, electro-optical, and optical sensors, as well as electronic warfare equipment.
