Between June 22 and 29, the Frigate Independência represented the Brazilian Navy at FLEETEX 250, a multinational exercise initiated in Norfolk and also conducted off the coast of Virginia and North Carolina, with defense training, air operations, formation maneuvers, and integration with friendly navies.

The Brazilian Navy, naval exercises, and the international role of the Frigate “Independência” gained prominence between June 22 and 29, during FLEETEX 250, a multinational training conducted from the Norfolk Naval Base and in maritime areas near the coast of Virginia and North Carolina.

The Brazilian participation took place in a highly complex operational environment, after the port phase in Norfolk, bringing together naval, air-naval, and military assets from more than 20 friendly nations, in a training agenda designed to test communication, tactical coordination, and integrated responses. The central objective, focused on combined training, was to enhance combined operational capability and strengthen interoperability between navies.

Representing the Fleet, the Frigate “Independência” (F44) was involved in scenarios aimed at different types of threat and response. The program included anti-submarine warfare, anti-aircraft defense, surface warfare, and defense against asymmetric threats.

The Brazilian ship also conducted air operations with the AH-11B Super Lynx helicopter. The formation maneuvers required coordination between units from various countries and reinforced the need for compatible procedures in joint missions.

Brazilian Navy, naval exercises, and integration with other forces

FLEETEX 250 went beyond the execution of military training. The exercise allowed for the exchange of knowledge, procedures, and doctrines among friendly navies, bringing crews closer in scenarios similar to those found in real operations.

The presence of the Frigate “Independência” demonstrated the Brazilian Navy’s ability to operate in a multinational environment, with planning, coordination, and execution aligned with international standards of naval operations.

For the Commander of the 1st Division of the Fleet and Commander of the Brazilian Task Group, Rear Admiral Marcelino, the participation increased the visibility of the Force. He highlighted that operating in a multinational environment strengthens operational capacity, enhances interoperability, and projects the professionalism of the Brazilian Fleet.

Brazilian frigate participates in historic formation

One of the most symbolic moments of FLEETEX 250 was the PHOTOEX, which brought together 26 ships from 14 friendly navies in a historic formation. The activity visually marked the integration among the participating nations.

The commission also reinforced the importance of the crew’s continuous training. This preparation is deemed essential to maintain high levels of operational readiness and fulfill the missions assigned to the Brazilian Navy.

The Commander of the Frigate “Independência”, Commander Nícolas, positively evaluated the results. He stated that each exercise contributed to improving procedures, increasing response capacity, and demonstrating readiness to operate alongside the world’s leading navies.

Besides Brazil and the United States, the host of the activity, FLEETEX 250 included representatives from Germany, Canada, South Korea, Denmark, Spain, Morocco, Mexico, Norway, the Netherlands, Peru, Senegal, and Turkey.

Mission proceeds to international naval review

With the conclusion of this stage, the Frigate “Independência” completed a cycle of intense training. The accumulated experiences are expected to directly contribute to the preparation of the Naval Force and future combined operations.

FLEETEX 250 is part of the commemorative events for the 250th anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America. After the exercise, the Brazilian ship proceeds with the national flag to the International Naval Review, the INR 250.

The international naval review takes place between New York and New Jersey and is scheduled to continue until July 4th. The program is also part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The events have a diplomatic and representative character, bringing together ships from various countries in a demonstration of cooperation, friendship, and mutual respect among participating navies. For the Brazilian Navy, presence in both stages reaffirms the commitment to international engagement, strategic presence, and building relationships aimed at global maritime security.

Why naval interoperability matters

Multinational exercises help navies train communication, coordination, and response in scenarios that may involve ships, aircraft, and different command chains.

In real operations, interoperability reduces misunderstandings and facilitates combined actions among partner countries.

For a naval force, this type of preparation also strengthens readiness, as it places crews in front of varied procedures, standards, and operational rhythms. In the maritime environment, where safety, cooperation, and international presence are connected, participating in training and naval reviews enhances diplomatic representation capacity and reinforces relations between friendly forces.
