Toyota Urban Cruiser EV: Compact, modern and developed in partnership with Suzuki, this electric SUV combines innovative design, three engine options and cutting-edge technology, scheduled to be launched in Europe in 2025.
After years of being timid in the electric car market, Toyota is finally starting to expand its portfolio. The Urban Cruiser EV is the newest member of the family, the result of a strategic collaboration with Suzuki. With a compact look and cutting-edge technology, the model promises to be a key piece in the goal of zero emissions in the European Union by 2035.
Toyota and Suzuki Collaboration: The Birth of the Urban Cruiser EV
Although the Urban Cruiser EV is based on Suzuki's eVitara, Toyota has made some changes to the design. The C-shaped headlights and dotted LED lines are reminiscent of the Japanese brand's visual identity, reminiscent of models like the new C-HR. However, the rest of the car maintains very similar features to the eVitara, including the taillights connected by a black bar.
The dedicated electric vehicle platform developed by Suzuki has been retained in the Urban Cruiser EV. This means that the SUV benefits from the best of both brands: Toyota’s reliability and know-how combined with Suzuki’s flexibility.
Technical specifications of Toyota's electric SUV
The Urban Cruiser EV offers three powertrain configurations, all electric:
- 49 kWh battery: entry-level version, front-wheel drive, 144 hp.
- 61 kWh battery: 174 hp or 184 hp options with all-wheel drive.
With these numbers, the SUV caters to different consumer profiles, from those looking for savings to those wanting more power.
Despite its compact size, at 4,28 meters long, the Urban Cruiser EV offers a surprisingly spacious interior. Thanks to its electric platform, the interior space is comparable to that of larger SUVs. Sliding rear seats allow for space adjustments as needed, whether for passengers or luggage.
Global strategy: Europe as a starting point
With the launch of the Urban Cruiser EV in Europe, Toyota advances towards its goal of 15 zero-emission cars by 2026. The SUV plays a crucial role, especially in a market where environmental regulations are increasingly strict.
Although the model has the potential to compete with electric SUVs like the BYD Yuan Pro in Brazil, Toyota's strategy here remains focused on flex hybrids. Ethanol is seen as an intermediate solution for reducing emissions, leaving electric vehicles in the background.
A Closer Look at the Urban Cruiser EV
The Urban Cruiser EV shares many elements with the eVitara, but small details in the design and finishes show Toyota's identity. Inside, the logo on the steering wheel and the 10,1" multimedia center are almost the only changes.
Among the challenges, the following stand out: energy consumption, which has not yet been disclosed, and the acceptance of the model in a competitive market. However, with a competitive price and technological resources, the SUV has everything it needs to win over consumers.
The Urban Cruiser EV marks a new chapter in the journey Toyota's journey towards electrification. Combining Suzuki's expertise and Toyota's commitment to sustainability, the model is a promising bet for the global market. While Brazil awaits a possible launch, Europe is preparing to receive this versatile and efficient compact in 2025.
