According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Tesla has quietly registered to produce motors for electric airplanes and boats. Originally discovered and reported by Electrek, Tesla filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on December 29 for the production of motors for airplanes and boats. See what the application says for the patent of electric airplane and boat motors.
The trademark application describes the electric automaker’s plans to develop and manufacture aircraft and boat motors:
“The registration of the TESLA™ trademark is intended to cover electric motors that are asynchronous not intended for use in land vehicles; electric aircraft motors; electric motors, namely, synchronous electric motors not intended for use in land vehicles; permanent magnet electric motors; marine electric motors; synchronous motors for driving a common load; toy motors; linear motors.”
While its U.S. program doesn’t reveal much about the motors for airplanes and boats, an international program will. The application lists the international classification as “Class 7,” which falls under the description of “machines and machine tools; motors and electric motors (except for land vehicles); couplings and transmission parts of machines (except for land vehicles)”

Looking back over the last two years, CEO Elon Musk has suggested several applications for off-road vehicles that Tesla could explore. After Teslarati reported on the expansion of the Texas Gigafactory last year, Musk told us that the goal is to begin working in the green paradise around the property. Musk detailed the potential development of an electric boat that tourists could use to float down the Colorado River through Austin.
Musk Promises Launch of Waterproof Vehicle
Additionally, Musk suggested that the next generation of fully electric pickups, the Cybertruck, would be waterproof and have enough capacity to cross South Bay and Brazos San Diego Pass between Starbase and South Padre Island, Texas. Of course, it may take years for patents and trademarks to work through the system, so there is no timeline for when Tesla might implement these designs into current or future products. However, Musk proposed several unorthodox modes of travel for Tesla vehicles, including the potential capability of hovering for the Roadster.
