American Manufacturer Surpasses Tesla and Takes Lead in Electric Vehicle Sales in Canada, Driven by New Models and End of Subsidies.
Tesla is no longer the leader in electric vehicles in North America. In the first quarter of this year, General Motors (GM) surpassed Elon Musk’s company in Canada, marking an important turning point in the region’s electric vehicle market.
GM’s Rise in Canada
For years, Tesla dominated the electric vehicle market in the United States and Canada.
No company could rival the sales volume of the Austin-based company. However, this scenario has changed in Canada.

Recent data shows that General Motors surpassed Tesla in electric vehicle sales during the first quarter.
With a portfolio of 13 electric models, GM was able to increase its sales by 252% between January and March.
In total, the Detroit automaker sold 5,750 electric vehicles during this period. This volume was enough to surpass Tesla in the country.
Among GM’s models, the Chevy Equinox EV led sales with 1,892 units. The Chevrolet Silverado EV followed with 894 registrations.
Another highlight was the OPTIQ, Cadillac’s basic electric model, which sold 615 units. This number was close to the 720 units sold of the Cadillac Lyriq, the brand’s first electric vehicle.
Even the GMC Hummer EV, known for its high price and size, saw an 88% increase in sales, reaching 252 units during the period.
Decline in Tesla Sales
While GM was experiencing growth, Tesla recorded sales of 524 units in the Quebec region during the same quarter.
This number highlights the company’s recent difficulties, which it is already facing in other markets.
In Europe, Volkswagen has taken the lead, while in China, BYD occupies the top spot in the segment.
Canada is just another chapter in Tesla’s series of losses in the global electric vehicle market.
Despite Elon Musk’s statements downplaying the issues, the numbers indicate an increasingly challenging scenario for the company.
End of Subsidies Affects the Market
One of the main causes of this shift in Canada was the end of government incentives for purchasing electric vehicles.
In Quebec, federal subsidies were discontinued between February and April 1st. The national discount program was suspended starting January 1st of this year.
Previously, the Canadian government offered cash amounts for those who purchased or leased an electric vehicle. This support significantly stimulated sales in previous years.
With the end of financial aid, sales have fallen across the sector.
GM itself felt the effects. Despite having surpassed Tesla, its 5,750 registered vehicles represent a significant decline compared to the more than 15,000 units sold in the last third of last year.
Even in the face of declining sales, Elon Musk continues to have high ambitions.
He recently declared his intention to sell 1,000,000 autonomous cars by the end of next year.
However, this goal will depend on Tesla’s ability to recover its image in the market, which has been undermined by the CEO’s own statements and strategies.
