Disappearance of metal bridge about 20 meters long exposed doubts about historical heritage, transport with heavy machinery, and the origin of a negotiation now investigated by authorities
A historic iron bridge, with over 140 years of connection to the old Ferrovia Oeste de Minas, disappeared from the rural area of Prados, in Campo das Vertentes, and was located days later in Lima Duarte, about 180 kilometers away, in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais.
The metal structure, approximately 20 meters long and five meters wide, had been seen normally at the site on the Thursday before the disappearance, according to information from the Prados City Hall and reports from local residents.
A few days later, however, those who passed by the location found only an empty space. The situation immediately drew attention because the bridge weighed tons, was installed in an area with limited access, and was part of the railway memory of the municipality.

Dissatisfied with seeing highways cutting through the Amazon and isolating animals in the treetops, a Brazilian biologist created suspension bridges, has recorded over 20,000 safe crossings, and has just been awarded by National Geographic.
According to the city hall, the structure was manufactured in England at the end of the 19th century and sent to Brazil to integrate the old Ferrovia Oeste de Minas, considered one of the most important in the railway history of Minas Gerais.
Even after the deactivation of railway traffic, the bridge continued to be a regional symbol. Additionally, it was frequently used as a passage point and reference for cyclists, motorcyclists, and local residents.

How did an entire bridge disappear without drawing attention?
The main question raised by the case is simple: how did a structure of this size manage to disappear without anyone noticing the movement?
According to preliminary analyses conducted by authorities and municipal employees, the removal of the bridge required a complex and carefully planned operation.
At the site, marks compatible with the circulation of heavy trucks, backhoes, and industrial cutting equipment were found.
Additionally, information gathered during the investigation indicates that specialized tools may have been used to dismantle the structure before transport.
There are also reports that part of the access road to the area may have been blocked with dirt. Thus, the circulation of vehicles, witnesses, and public agents could have been hindered during the operation.
Therefore, the disappearance has come to be treated as a case of great complexity by the authorities.
Bridge reappeared in the tourist area of Serra de Ibitipoca
While the searches advanced, anonymous tips helped locate the structure.
The bridge was found on Tuesday, June 10, 2026, in Lima Duarte, specifically in the tourist region of Serra de Ibitipoca.
According to information released by the Minas Gerais press, the structure was inside a property linked to the Ibiti Project, an enterprise focused on environmental preservation and sustainable tourism.
In an official statement, those responsible for the project stated that the acquisition occurred regularly from a merchant specializing in antiques.
According to the statement, the purchase included an invoice, necessary documentation, and authorizations related to the transport of the piece.
Furthermore, the enterprise reported that it began to cooperate immediately with the authorities after becoming aware of the suspicions involving the origin of the structure.
Investigation seeks to identify those responsible for the removal and negotiation
Despite the location of the bridge, the investigation is still far from being concluded.
Currently, the Civil Police of Minas Gerais, the Federal Police, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Minas Gerais are working to reconstruct the entire trajectory of the structure.
The goal is to identify who removed the bridge, who brokered the negotiation, who authorized the transport, and which people participated in the movement.
One of the lines of investigation considers the possibility of commercial interest in high-value historical heritage.
This is because old railway structures often attract the interest of collectors, tourist enterprises, and owners seeking historical elements for architectural and landscaping projects.
Residents begin mobilization to bring heritage back
As authorities advance in the investigation, residents of Prados are mobilizing for the return of the bridge to its original location.
For the community, the structure represents much more than an old metallic construction.
In practice, it is part of the cultural, historical, and emotional identity of Campo das Vertentes.
For this reason, campaigns and demonstrations on social media have started to advocate for the immediate return of the heritage to the municipality.
According to the chief of staff of Prados, Luís Belo, the city plans to organize a special reception when the bridge returns.
At the same time, the city hall is already studying the necessary logistics to carry out the return transport, an operation that will again require trucks, escorts, and heavy equipment.
Even with the bridge located, questions remain unanswered. After all, who removed the structure? Who authorized its sale? And how did a historic bridge over a century old manage to disappear from the map and reappear 180 kilometers away without drawing immediate attention?
