The construction project for the gas desulfurization plant at the steel plant located in Espírito Santo will create 400 jobs in the region. Thyssenkrupp looks forward to contributing to ArcelorMittal's future with the new contract.

This Tuesday, (06/12), the domestic steel industry is witnessing yet another major agreement for the segment. This is a contract between the company Thyssenkrupp and the giant ArcelorMittal, for the construction of a coke oven gas desulfurization plant in steel mill located in Serra, Espírito Santo. The project will feature state-of-the-art technologies for cleaning gases and will offer more than 400 jobs to residents of the state.

Gas desulfurization plant project at the ArcelorMittal steel plant will contribute to the development of the state of Espírito Santo

The multinational company Thyssenkrupp is increasingly expanding its presence in the Brazilian market, now with a recently signed contract with the company ArcelorMittal, the largest steel company in the country.

The project will be carried out under the EPC (Engineering, Purchase, Construction) regime and will rely on state-of-the-art technologies from the foreign company to ensure more efficient cleaning of gases at the steel plant located in Serra.

In this way, with Thyssenkrupp's services, ArcelorMittal will be able to reduce the emission of polluting gases into the atmosphere on a large scale, bringing more environmental commitment to its operations.

In addition, the agreement provides for the modernization of the liquid effluent treatment plant in the coke oven area.

According to the companies' project plan, the coke oven gas desulfurization plant at the steel plant should be ready in about 30 months.

During the peak of works, the companies hope to contribute to the generation of around 400 jobs for residents of the Espírito Santo region.

“By-product of the transformation of coal into coke, coke oven gas is one of the main energy inputs in a steel industry and is used in various processes that require energy. With this desulfurization plant that we are going to install, ArcelorMittal Tubarão will be able to intensify the use of this gas and, at the same time, reduce its emissions, making its operation more sustainable”, commented the Head of Sales of thyssenkrupp Uhde for South America, Luiz Antonio Mello.

Thyssenkrupp reinforces the need to use energy from the ArcelorMittal steel plant in a clean way to minimize environmental impacts

The Head of Sales at Thyssenkrupp Uhde also commented on the power generation potential of the ArcelorMittal steel plant.

According to him, the coke oven gas that can be produced at ArcelorMittal Tubarão is equivalent to around 480 MW of electricity, which corresponds to the average consumption of 2 million homes.

Therefore, it is necessary that the project contribute to the energy being directed in a clean way, without being wasted, since it is a high generation potential.

The CEO of Thyssenkrupp for South America, Paulo Alvarenga, reinforced that the transition to operations with low emission of polluting gases is the future of the global market.

In this way, the company intends to be present by offering cutting-edge services for cleaning gases in projects such as the Serra steel plant.

“With our unique technologies and the solid expertise of our engineering teams in Brazil and Germany, we are strongly supporting the steel industry in this transition. Our solid relationship with ArcelorMittal Brasil is an excellent example of how to use the best technology available”, concluded the executive.
