The Construction Project of the Gas Desulfurization Plant at the Steelmill Located in Espírito Santo Will Have 400 Job Openings in the Region. Thyssenkrupp Hopes to Contribute to the Future of ArcelorMittal with the New Contract.
The national steel market is witnessing another major agreement for the segment this Tuesday, (12/06), regarding a contract between Thyssenkrupp and the giant ArcelorMittal for the construction of a cokery gas desulfurization plant at the steelmill located in Serra, Espírito Santo. The project will feature cutting-edge technologies for gas cleaning and will provide more than 400 job openings for residents of the state.
Gas Desulfurization Plant Project at ArcelorMittal’s Steelmill Will Contribute to the Development of the State of Espírito Santo
The multinational company Thyssenkrupp is increasingly expanding its presence in the Brazilian market, now with a recently signed contract with ArcelorMittal, the largest steel producer in the country.
The project will be executed under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) regime and will utilize cutting-edge technologies from the foreign company to ensure greater efficiency in gas cleaning at the steelmill located in Serra.

While old bridges still span railways around the world, in the United States a 2,300-ton structure was assembled off-site and transported by barge along the Hudson River to replace a century-old bridge.
Thus, with Thyssenkrupp’s services, ArcelorMittal will be able to significantly reduce pollutant gas emissions into the atmosphere, bringing more environmental commitment to its operations.
In addition, the agreement provides for the modernization of the liquid effluent treatment plant in the cokery area.
According to the companies’ project plan, the cokery gas desulfurization plant at the steelmill is expected to be completed in about 30 months.
During the peak of construction, the companies expect to contribute to the generation of around 400 job openings for residents of the Espírito Santo region.
“A byproduct of the coal-to-coke transformation, cokery gas is one of the main energy inputs of a steel mill and is used in various energy-intensive processes. With this desulfurization plant we are going to install, ArcelorMittal Tubarão will be able to intensify the use of this gas while simultaneously reducing its emissions, making its operation more sustainable,” commented the Head of Sales of Thyssenkrupp Uhde for South America, Luiz Antonio Mello.
Thyssenkrupp Reinforces the Need for Clean Energy Use at ArcelorMittal’s Steelmill to Minimize Environmental Impacts
The Head of Sales of Thyssenkrupp Uhde also commented on the potential for energy generation at ArcelorMittal’s steelmill.
According to him, the cokery gas that can be produced at ArcelorMittal Tubarão is equivalent to about 480 MW of electrical energy, which corresponds to the average consumption of 2 million households.
Therefore, it is essential that the project contributes to directing energy in a clean manner, without waste, given its high generation potential.
The CEO of Thyssenkrupp for South America, Paulo Alvarenga, emphasized that the transition to low-emission operations is the future of the global market.
Thus, the company aims to be present by offering cutting-edge services for gas cleaning in projects such as the steelmill in Serra.
“With our exclusive technologies and the solid expertise of our engineering teams in Brazil and Germany, we are strongly supporting the steel sector in this transition. Our solid relationship with ArcelorMittal Brazil is an excellent example of how to utilize the best available technology,” concluded the executive.
