With 310 Thousand Formal Jobs Created by May, São Paulo Represents Almost One Third of All Job Openings in Brazil in 2025.

The state of São Paulo created 310 thousand job openings with a signed work permit in the first five months of this year, according to data from the Seade Foundation, based on information from Caged, from the Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE).

This amounts to an average of 2 thousand new jobs per day, consolidating São Paulo as the largest generator of formal jobs in Brazil.

Significant Participation in the National Scenario

In May alone, over 33 thousand new jobs were created in São Paulo.

This represented 22% of all formal job openings generated in the country that month.

In the year-to-date, from January to May, the state was responsible for 32% of the total signed job openings in Brazil. Considering the last 12 months, this percentage was 27%.

In total, Brazil created about 1.05 million signed job openings from January to May. Of this volume, 309,758 were generated in São Paulo.

In other words, approximately one in three new jobs in the country was created in the state of São Paulo during this period.

In the 12-month period from June 2024 to May 2025, the country registered 1.62 million new job openings. In the same interval, São Paulo created 434,129 jobs, maintaining national leadership.

Continuous Growth in the Number of Job Openings

The job balance in the state has grown in all analyzed periods. In May, there was an increase of 0.23%.

In the year-to-date, the increase was 2.16%. In the 12-month total, the growth reached 3.06%.

These percentages show that, month by month, the state has been maintaining a positive trajectory in generating formal jobs.

In addition to the quantity of job openings, the quality of hires also stood out. In May, São Paulo had the highest average admission salary in the country: R$ 2,548.34.

This amount surpassed that registered in the Federal District (R$ 2,429.09), Santa Catarina (R$ 2,304.49), and Rio de Janeiro (R$ 2,251.53). The national average salary during the same period was R$ 2,248.71.

Capital and Major Cities Drive the Numbers

The city of São Paulo comfortably leads among municipalities with the highest job balance. In May alone, the capital generated 8,893 new formal jobs.

In the year-to-date, there were 71,512 job openings. In the 12-month interval, the number reached 135,946.

Other major cities also stand out. Guarulhos created 11,381 jobs in the year-to-date and 19,544 in the last 12 months.

Osasco had a balance of 8,149 jobs for the year and 18,950 over 12 months. Campinas, Sorocaba, São José dos Campos, and Santo André also recorded very positive balances.

These urban centers are the main economic hubs of the state and encompass a large part of industrial, commercial, and service activities.

Medium-Sized Cities Also Stand Out

In addition to regional capitals, medium-sized cities and even small municipalities also showed good performance. Matão, for example, created 1,197 jobs in May and 5,392 in the year-to-date. São José do Rio Pardo had a balance of 894 jobs for the month and 2,020 for the year.

Other highlights included Pontal (734 jobs in May), Capela do Alto (524), Bebedouro (550), and Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo (546). These data show that job generation is spread across various regions of the state, and not restricted only to the capital or major centers.

Sectors That Hired the Most

In May, the services sector led job generation in the state, with 18,813 jobs created. Next were commerce and vehicle repair, with 8,704 new opportunities.

Other sectors with good performance included: public administration, defense, education, health, and social services (7,351 jobs), agriculture and fishing (5,163), human health and social services (5,068), and financial, real estate, and professional activities (5,017).

The manufacturing industry generated 1,700 jobs, while the accommodation and food sector created 1,418 positions. The transportation, warehousing, and postal service sector had a net gain of 3,686 jobs in May.

These numbers indicate that job generation is occurring in different areas of the economy, with an emphasis on services and commerce, but also with a relevant presence from agriculture and industry.

Southeast Also Benefits

In the regional scenario, the Southeast also leads in job creation in the country. In May, the region generated 74,536 formal job openings. In the year-to-date, there were 503,777 jobs, and in the total 12 months, 706,467.

São Paulo, the main state in the region, represents a significant portion of these results.

With a diversified economy and strong industrial structure, the state has been maintaining recruitment rates above the national average.

Salary Continues to Rise

The average admission salary in São Paulo grew by 0.51% compared to the same month last year.

This increase, although moderate, reinforces the state’s position as a leader in average remuneration for new hires.

In addition to offering more job openings, the state has kept the average admission value above the national average. This helps attract workers from other regions and strengthens the internal market.

With impressive numbers across all indicators, São Paulo consolidates itself as the state with the highest balance of formal job openings in the country.

The generation of jobs, combined with the highest average salary, demonstrates the strength of the São Paulo economy in the national context. This leadership is expected to continue influencing the course of the Brazilian labor market throughout 2025.
