The Model Arrived in Brazil in June and Challenges the Toyota Corolla with an Impressive Consumption of Up to 43.3 km/l. Meet the New Hybrid Sedan that Promises to Revolutionize the Brazilian Automotive Market with Technology and Efficiency.
In a market dominated by traditional brands, a new Chinese competitor is capturing the attention of Brazilian consumers.
The BYD King, officially launched in June of this year, promises to dethrone the Toyota Corolla with its economical consumption and cutting-edge technology. But does it deliver on its promises? Let’s check the details of this new hybrid sedan that is already turning heads.
The BYD King and Its Versions
The BYD King arrived in Brazil in two versions: the GL, with an initial price of R$ 175,800, and the GS, which can cost up to R$ 187,800.

What truly sets this model apart in the market is not just its competitive price, but primarily its performance in terms of fuel consumption.
According to the National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Industrial Quality (Inmetro), the BYD plug-in hybrid boasts a surprising range.
Record Consumption: Far Beyond Expected
The Brazilian Vehicle Labeling Program (PBEV) provides measurements that place the BYD King in a class above its competitors.
In a scenario where combustion and electric motors operate simultaneously, the King records 44.2 km/l in the city and 36.7 km/l on the highway.
In the top-of-the-line GS version, these figures are 43.3 km/l and 32.7 km/l, respectively. These numbers represent a fuel economy that far surpasses that of the Toyota Corolla.
For comparison, the Corolla achieves 12.8 km/l in urban cycles and 11.1 km/l on the highway using ethanol.
With gasoline, performance improves to 18.5 km/l in the city and 15.7 km/l on the highway. In other words, the BYD King is not only more economical but also redefines efficiency standards in the market.
Gasoline Engine Performance
Even when considering just the gasoline engine, the figures for the BYD King are impressive. In the base version, the Chinese sedan can achieve 16.3 km/l in the city and 14.3 km/l on the highway.
In the more expensive configuration, those values rise to 16.8 km/l and 14.7 km/l. These figures bring the King closer to its competitors, but its advantage remains in hybrid use.
Electric Range
The electric-only range also deserves attention. In the GL version, the BYD King can travel 32 km on electricity alone, while in the GS version this range reaches 80 km.
In China, the figures are slightly higher: 55 km and 105 km, respectively, according to data released by the manufacturer.
Performance Differences Between Versions
The differences in consumption and range between the versions can be explained by technical specifications.
The sedan is equipped with a 1.5 gasoline engine with a Miller cycle, which develops 110 hp of power and 13.8 kgfm of torque.
When integrated with the electric system, the combined power is 209 hp in the base version and 235 hp in the top version, comparable to the Song Plus model.
Batteries and Power
Additionally, the BYD King offers two Blade battery options, with 8.3 kWh or 18.3 kWh. The different battery capacities are one of the factors explaining the performance and range variations between the GL and GS versions.
Features and Dimensions of the BYD King
The BYD King measures 4.78 meters in length, 1.84 m in width, 1.49 m in height, and has a wheelbase of 2.72 m.
The trunk, with a capacity of 450 liters, is slightly smaller than that of the Toyota Corolla, which offers 470 liters. Inside, the King follows the standard of other BYD models, with a modern design and a robust equipment package.
Standard Equipment
The GL version comes equipped with 8.3 kWh batteries, six airbags, 12.8″ multimedia central with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, 8.8″ digital instrument panel, wireless phone charger, sound system with six speakers, multifunction steering wheel, electronic parking brake, 360° camera, keyless entry (NFC), power-adjustable driver’s seat with six positions, front and rear parking sensors, integrated wi-fi, and four USB type A ports (two front and two rear).
The GS version adds 18.3 kWh batteries, power-adjustable passenger seat, sound system with eight speakers, front headlights with integrated daytime running lights, ambient interior lights, and dual-zone air conditioning.
New Weighty Competitor
The BYD King arrives in Brazil to change the game in the hybrid sedan segment. With an impressive combination of fuel economy, performance, and technology, it directly challenges established models like the Toyota Corolla.
