Little-Known Version of the Toyota Corolla, the GLi Combines Powerful Engine and Competitive Price, Targeting Specific Audiences and Rarely Found in Physical Dealerships.
The Toyota Corolla maintains its lead as the best-selling midsize sedan in Brazil, standing out primarily in the XEi and Altis Hybrid versions.
However, there is a lesser-known configuration of the model called Toyota Corolla GLi, which, despite its low visibility in traditional retail, offers a powerful engine and competitive price, costing even less than the Volkswagen Polo hatch in specific sales conditions.
The origin of the GLi version dates back to 2009, when it was launched to occupy the space between the XLi and XEi versions of the tenth generation Corolla.

Since then, the GLi nomenclature has remained in the Japanese automaker’s portfolio, and in 2025, it still appears on Toyota’s official configurator with a suggested price of R$ 167,590.

This amount is only R$ 1,300 less than the price charged for the XEi version.
However, the commercial focus of the Corolla GLi is not the average consumer, but rather corporate clients, fleet operators, taxi drivers, and the PcD (People with Disabilities) audience, through the direct sales system.
According to an investigation carried out by automotive portals in June 2025, the production of the Corolla GLi was halted in April of this year, leaving only stock units available at authorized dealerships.
This limitation reinforces the “almost secret” character of the version, which is rarely seen on the streets compared to the more complete variants.
Corolla GLi Can Be Cheaper Than Popular Hatches
The discounts offered in negotiations for direct sales can significantly reduce the price of the Toyota Corolla GLi.
For PcD clients, the price can be below R$ 120,000, while taxi drivers can acquire it for less than R$ 110,000.
This way, the midsize sedan can cost less than high-volume hatches like the Volkswagen Polo, Chevrolet Onix, and Peugeot 208, expanding the appeal of the model in a segment traditionally dominated by compact vehicles.
In mechanical terms, both the Corolla GLi and the XEi version share the same engine and transmission setup.

The engine is a 2.0 naturally aspirated flex four-cylinder, with a power output of 169 hp when powered by gasoline and 175 hp with ethanol, plus a torque of 21.3 kgfm.
The transmission is of the CVT type (continuously variable transmission) with a simulation of ten gears, providing similar performance between the two versions.
Differences in Equipment and Finish
Despite sharing the same mechanical base, the Corolla GLi presents significant differences in finish and equipment list when compared to the XEi.
Externally, the GLi version features halogen headlights and 16-inch alloy wheels, while the XEi offers 17-inch wheels and more advanced lighting.
The interior of the GLi is simpler, with fabric-covered seats, a smaller instrument panel with a 7-inch digital screen, and the absence of items such as keyless entry, digital air conditioning, cruise control, and a fully digital dashboard, which are present in the higher versions.
Regarding safety, the Corolla XEi comes from the factory with a complete ADAS package (short for advanced driver assistance systems), including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, lane-keeping assist, front collision alert with automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beam.
The GLi version, in turn, only offers the mandatory equipment: ABS brakes, traction and stability control, front, side, and curtain airbags, as well as electric power steering with a multifunction steering wheel.

The multimedia system of the GLi version already features a 10-inch screen, compatible with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, representing an evolution compared to previous generations when the model did not even offer a multimedia central or a 2.0 engine.
Until 2019, the Corolla GLi used a 1.8 engine, which produced 139 hp with gasoline and 144 hp with ethanol, along with torque between 17.7 and 18.4 kgfm.
Restricted Market and News for 2025
Although the Toyota website displays the Corolla GLi with an official price of R$ 167,590, the version is not available for sales in traditional retail.
It is only intended for clients with a CNPJ, rural producers, PcD individuals, and taxi drivers, according to the Japanese automaker’s direct sales policy.
Thus, the XEi version assumes the role of the entry-level option for the average consumer, as the GLi is not offered to the general public.
For the second half of 2025, Toyota announced the arrival of a new configuration of the Corolla GLi with hybrid powertrain.
The future version is expected to maintain the simpler finish but will gain targeted improvements in convenience, along with the hybrid setup already used in other models of the brand.

The hybrid engine will consist of a 1.8 naturally aspirated engine paired with an electric motor with a self-recharging battery, delivering a combined power of 122 hp.
The expectation is that this news will expand access to hybrid technology in the midsize sedan segment, making the Corolla GLi Hybrid an interesting alternative for those seeking efficiency and lower operational costs.
When considering the current scenario of the Brazilian market, it is observed that the Corolla GLi versions represent differentiated options in the manufacturer’s portfolio.
The model stands out for both its cost-benefit ratio in direct sales and the promise of technological updates with the arrival of the hybrid version, consolidating itself as one of the most accessible and advanced sedans in the category.
Toyota Corolla GLi Hybrid Will Be the Protagonist?
With the growing demand for more efficient and economical vehicles, will the Toyota Corolla GLi Hybrid attract new consumers and further strengthen the sedan’s presence in Brazil?
