Toyota expands focus on electric vehicles with an SUV designed for travel, generous interior space, sporty performance, and technologies designed for family use beyond the urban environment. The new bZ4X Touring bets on high autonomy, intelligent all-wheel drive, and increased cargo capacity to compete in one of the most strategic segments of electric mobility.

By introducing the new bZ4X Touring, Toyota expanded its strategy for electric vehicles and began targeting consumers who seek more than just urban commuting in a battery-powered SUV.

Focusing on travel, leisure, and family use, the model combines high performance, increased interior space, and technologies aimed at practicality to compete in a segment increasingly pressured by customers demanding versatility in the same package.

With acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds in the all-wheel drive configuration, the sports utility vehicle emerges as one of the most powerful proposals ever associated with the Japanese brand’s electric line.

The manufacturer also positions the vehicle as an alternative aimed at families who use the car both in daily routines and for travel, leisure, and long-distance journeys.

Toyota changes strategy for family electric SUVs

The change in approach represents an important move within Toyota’s global strategy for battery-powered vehicles.

Toyota launches bZ4X Touring with 380 hp, range of up to 734 km, all-wheel drive, and a trunk of 619 liters.

Instead of reinforcing only energy efficiency and urban use, the bZ4X Touring is now presented as an electric SUV capable of assuming functions traditionally associated with mid-size family utilities.

According to the company, the project was developed after analyzing consumer behavior in different markets.

The automaker identified a growing demand for electric vehicles capable of carrying more luggage, offering greater comfort on trips, and handling situations beyond conventional asphalt, especially on routes related to leisure and outdoor activities.

Performance of 380 hp and intelligent all-wheel drive

A large part of this repositioning appears precisely in the mechanical configuration of the version equipped with all-wheel drive, developed to bring the electric SUV closer to utilities traditionally associated with travel and more varied routes.

In this setup, the system uses electric motors on both axles and delivers a combined power of 280 kW, equivalent to approximately 380 horsepower, a number that places the model among the strongest electric SUVs in the category.

Besides the strong acceleration, Toyota claims that the electronic system continuously monitors steering, traction, and wheel rotation to distribute torque more efficiently between the axles.

The manufacturer maintains that this calibration helps improve stability and control on low-traction surfaces, such as snow, light mud, and uneven roads.

Although most SUV buyers remain focused on urban use, the sector continues to value vehicles with appearance and capability associated with off-road travel.

In this context, the X-MODE system gained a central role in the proposal of the new model.

Integrated with the driving mode selector, the feature adjusts torque delivery, braking, and electronic responses according to different types of terrain.

Toyota states that the system offers three specific configurations to increase stability and control on more challenging surfaces.

The presence of X-MODE also reinforces a characteristic that is becoming more common among recent electric SUVs: the attempt to bring energy efficiency closer to expanded usability.

Instead of limiting the vehicle to the urban environment, manufacturers have started investing in features that enhance the feeling of safety and versatility during trips and leisure routes.

74.69 kWh battery promises a range of up to 734 km

Besides the more aggressive performance, Toyota treats range as one of the central pillars of the strategy to broaden the appeal of the bZ4X Touring on long-distance trips.

To achieve this, the SUV uses a 74.69 kWh battery and reaches up to 734 kilometers per charge in the WLTC cycle in the front-wheel-drive Z version, according to numbers released by the manufacturer itself.

The range places the model among the medium electric vehicles with the greatest range within this measurement standard used in Japan.

Besides the extended range, Toyota claims that the vehicle supports fast charging from 10% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes with a 150 kW charger, even at an external temperature of minus 10 degrees Celsius.

The data is relevant because one of the main concerns of electric vehicle consumers still involves loss of efficiency and increased charging time in cold environments.

The automaker tries to use these numbers to reduce the perception of limitations of electric vehicles on long trips.

The combination of a larger battery, faster charging, and updated electronic management becomes part of the brand’s strategy to face competitors that have advanced more quickly in the global electric SUV segment.

619-liter trunk enhances family proposal

While some electric vehicles prioritize only efficiency and urban design, the bZ4X Touring also bets on more generous dimensions to meet consumers who use the car for trips and extended commutes.

The model is 4.83 meters long, 1.86 meters wide, 1.675 meters high, and has a wheelbase of 2.85 meters, measurements that help enhance the feeling of comfort for passengers and luggage.

According to Toyota, these measurements allowed for increased passenger space and improved comfort during extended commutes.

The trunk is another highlight presented by the manufacturer.

The compartment offers a capacity of 619 liters, a volume about 40% larger than the conventional bZ4X.

Toyota claims that the space can accommodate up to four 9.5-inch golf bags, depending on the shape of the equipment being transported.

When the rear seats are folded down, the total volume reaches 1,240 liters.

The solution increases flexibility for accommodating larger suitcases, disassembled bicycles, sports equipment, and different types of cargo used in trips and leisure activities.

In addition to the increased capacity, the compartment received features aimed at practicality.

The SUV is equipped with hooks for securing luggage and levers installed near the rear hatch to facilitate folding the seats directly from the cargo area.

The proposal is to simplify internal organization without requiring more complex movements from the user.

Adventurous design and cabin with 14-inch screen

Visually, Toyota also decided to reinforce the SUV’s adventurous profile to bring the model closer to utility vehicles historically linked to travel, leisure, and activities conducted outside the urban environment.

For this reason, the bZ4X Touring received LED rear lights with a horizontal signature, reinforced body frames, large roof rails, and wheels up to 20 inches in black finish.

Inside, the vehicle features a lower-profile horizontal dashboard and an independent 14-inch multimedia center.

The central console includes wireless charging for smartphones and enhanced integration with mobile devices.

Toyota also offers black and khaki trim options, aiming to create a visual identity more aligned with recreational and family use.

In terms of electronic assistance, Toyota has also expanded the technology package to reinforce the proposal of an SUV designed for both urban routes and longer trips.

From the factory, the model comes with Toyota Safety Sense, a set that includes pre-collision braking, lane-keeping assist, and driver support systems in heavy traffic situations.

Additional features include Proactive Driving Assist, aimed at assisting with decelerations and turns, as well as Toyota Teammate, a platform that includes semi-autonomous functions for traffic jams and remote parking.

According to the manufacturer, the intention is to combine safety, convenience, and ease of use in urban and road routes.

The new bZ4X Touring will be produced at the Yajima plant, operated by Subaru in Japan.

The industrial partnership reinforces the cooperation between the two companies in projects related to electrification and the development of platforms aimed at all-wheel-drive vehicles.

By positioning the model as an electric SUV designed for travel, luggage, and extended family use, Toyota tries to respond to an important change in consumer behavior.

The discussion in the segment no longer revolves solely around autonomy or energy efficiency, but also the vehicle’s ability to fully replace traditional combustion-powered utilities in different usage scenarios.
