Over Time, Pillows Can Turn Yellow Due to Sweat and Impurities. But With the Right Tricks, It Is Possible to Restore the Original Color and Maintain Hygiene!

Yellow stains on pillows are common and inevitable over time. They appear due to constant contact with body fluids, sweat, skin oil, and even exposure to sunlight and fabric oxidation.

But the good news is that there are effective ways to wash the pillow and restore its appearance.

What Causes Yellow Stains?

Before learning how to remove these stains, it is important to understand their origins. Sweat is one of the main culprits. Even while sleeping, the body releases sweat to regulate temperature. This fluid can seep through the pillowcase and accumulate in the pillow, leaving yellow marks.

In addition, the natural oil from the skin also contributes to the problem. Over time, this oil deposits on the fabric and intensifies the yellowing. Another important factor is oxidation. The simple contact of the pillow with oxygen can alter its color.

Exposure to sunlight is another point to consider. Although many believe that leaving the pillow outside helps kill germs, radiation can accelerate the oxidation process and intensify the stains.

How to Wash a Yellowed Pillow?

One of the most effective ways to clean the pillow is to use a simple homemade solution made with baking soda, white vinegar, and water. This method is efficient and easy to apply.

Deep Cleaning Recipe:

  • 500 ml of water
  • 100 ml of white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda

Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle and apply directly to the stains. Let it sit for about 10 minutes and then wash normally. Ideally, dry the pillow in the shade, in a well-ventilated area.

If you prefer a more traditional cleaning, the washing machine can be an option. Before starting the process, remove the pillowcase and any protective cover. It is also essential to read the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid possible damage to the material.

To enhance stain removal, add liquid soap and a little baking soda during the wash. Choose the delicate items setting, and after cleaning, let the pillow dry completely before using it.

Can the Pillow Go in the Spin Cycle?

Yes, but with caution. A spin cycle can be used to remove excess water, provided the pillow is positioned correctly inside the machine. What should not be done is to twist a pillow, as this can deform it.

Another common mistake is placing the pillow in the dryer. Intense heat can damage its internal structure, leaving it misshapen or stiff. Also, avoid exposing it directly to sunlight, as radiation can intensify the yellowing.

Importance of Pillow Hygiene

In addition to keeping it looking clean, sanitizing the pillow is essential for health. This is because the accumulation of sweat and oil creates a favorable environment for the proliferation of microorganisms. Among them, the most common are dust mites, fungi, and bacteria.

These contaminants can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory problems. Symptoms such as skin irritation, eye symptoms, asthma attacks, and rhinitis are common among people who sleep with dirty pillows.

Children, the elderly, and those with allergies are even more vulnerable to these conditions.

The recommendation is to maintain hygiene daily. Besides regularly cleaning the pillow, it is also important to change the pillowcases frequently and wash bed linens weekly.

Mattress Also Needs Cleaning

If the pillow accumulates dirt, the mattress is no different. Dust, sweat, and dead skin cells deposit on the fabric fibers, promoting the growth of dust mites and other microorganisms.

Dust mites are one of the main causes of respiratory allergies. They feed on organic debris and multiply rapidly in warm and humid environments, like mattresses.

To keep the mattress clean, it is recommended to vacuum the surface regularly and, whenever possible, expose it to fresh air in shaded areas.

For more thorough sanitization, it is best to use specialized services. Technicians use specific products and professional equipment to eliminate microorganisms and ensure a healthier sleeping environment.
