Swiss Construction Crosses The Alps With Advanced Technology, Two Parallel Tubes, Reinforced Safety And Transformed Mobility Between The North And South Of Europe.

Modern engineering has transformed the way people and goods move across the European continent. Among skyscrapers, impressive bridges, and viaducts, one project stands out for its grandeur: the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland. With a length of 57.1 kilometers, it is considered the longest railway tunnel in the world.

A Project That Crosses The Alps

The tunnel crosses the Swiss Alps from end to end. It features two parallel tubes, each with its own railway line, connected by safety passages distributed every 325 meters. In total, the project includes about 152 kilometers of galleries and underground connections.

The construction began in 1999, after years of studies and exploratory drilling. The first major milestone occurred in 2010, when the teams celebrated the meeting of the eastern tube excavations. By 2011, it was the western tube’s turn to be completed.

The official inauguration took place in June 2016, marking the beginning of a new era for transport in Europe.

Depth And Extreme Challenges

In some sections, the tunnel is under 2,450 meters of rock, making it the deepest ever built. This condition required advanced technology to cope with pressure, heat, and ventilation. Additionally, thousands of workers participated in the project, which demanded meticulous planning and unprecedented engineering solutions.

Speed And Efficiency In Transport

The Gotthard Base Tunnel allows passenger trains to operate at 200 km/h, with a technical capacity of up to 250 km/h. Meanwhile, freight trains operate at lower speeds, but safety is ensured by modern monitoring and fire protection systems.

The new route has reduced travel time between Zurich and Milan by about one hour, benefiting both tourists and commerce.

The logistical and economic impact is significant, as Switzerland occupies a strategic position in the corridor that links the north to the south of Europe.

More than a record, the Swiss tunnel represents innovation, integration, and efficiency. It demonstrates how engineering can overcome natural barriers and offer mobility solutions that connect countries, economies, and people on a large scale.
