The world’s largest offshore wind turbine, with unique capacity, has just been launched into the sea, and the builder revealed impressive images of this monumental operation. Named OceanX, the giant dual-blade wind turbine from Mingyang is set for a journey of approximately 354 km over the next three days, until it reaches its final destination offshore.
Hurricane Resistant Wind Turbine Has 182 Meter Blades
Moving a 15,000-ton metal structure is not something simple. Even more so when it comes to an offshore wind turbine that must be taken to sea. This is what the Chinese company Mingyang Smart Energy has been doing for about three days, guiding a giant wind turbine to its operational site.
The offshore wind turbine has been named OceanX and is so large that it resembles a two-headed monster. And yes, the two “heads” refer to the two turbines that drive blades of about 182 meters.

The expectation is that the transport of this giant wind turbine will last 3 days and, as mentioned earlier, it will travel more than 354 km toward the Qingzhou IV Offshore Wind Farm, located offshore.
Hurricane Resistant Wind Turbine Can Produce 54,000 MWh
In addition to its imposing size, the “green” invention also stands out for its cutting-edge technological innovations. The OceanX, for example, can even withstand hurricanes, according to the Chinese company. The giant wind turbine is the world’s first offshore platform with two turbines, each capable of producing 8.3 Megawatts per hour (together they can deliver up to 16.6 MW).
The expectation is that they will produce around 54,000 MWh per year, enough to provide electricity to about 30,000 homes in China. As can be seen in the images, the two blades are at the top of a V-shaped structure, reinforced with high-tension cables. This structure, in turn, is fixed to a Y-shaped floating platform to provide stability.
The hurricane-resistant wind turbine is of the MySE16.6 (T) type, with a blade diameter of 182 meters. As previously mentioned, the platform weighs about 15,000 tons and was designed to operate in waters deeper than 35 meters. Mingyang Smart Energy also guarantees that the offshore wind turbine can withstand winds of up to 260 km/h, which is the wind speed for a Category 5 hurricane.

Events such as extratropical cyclones, hurricanes, and typhoons generate much alarm and fear among the population due to the major tragedies and losses associated with these types of events. However, thanks to scientific and technological development, science is gradually learning to harness these phenomena to generate positive aspects for society.
In this way, in September, the MySE 16-260 turbine set a record in generation by producing 384.1 MWh in 24 hours, enough to power 170,000 homes.
