The Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) is with registrations open for free language courses, offering 42 full scholarships aimed at people in situations of social vulnerability.
The initiative, developed by the Permanent Center for Extension of Letters (Nupel), seeks to expand access to linguistic training, especially covering historically marginalized groups, such as indigenous people, quilombolas, trans people and refugees.
Registrations are open until next Saturday, December 7th, and vacancies are reserved for the first semester of 2025.

In addition to the exclusive scholarships, there are also vacancies for black people, covering black and brown groups, according to self-declaration criteria. For those not covered by the scholarships, there is still the possibility of applying for paid vacancies.
Diversity of languages offered
The project includes classes in eight different languages, taught by students from the UFBA Literature course, always under the supervision of qualified teachers. The languages available are:
- English
- Spanish
- Alemão
- Francês
- Italian
- Kimbundu
- yoruba
Classes will be in person, reinforcing interaction between teachers and students, and aim to provide learning in varied contexts, from basic to intermediate levels.
In addition to the free options, there are paid courses available for those who do not receive one of the scholarships. Tuition fees vary depending on the language, with more affordable prices for languages such as Kimbundu and Yoruba.
Who can apply?
Full scholarships are exclusively for individuals with no academic or professional ties to UFBA. Applicants must meet the following prerequisites:
- Have an active registration in the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government (CadÚnico);
- Be at least 15 years old at the start of the academic semester;
- Present proof of completion or enrollment in high school, even if interrupted;
- Complete the application form with all required documents.
Specific groups, such as indigenous people, quilombolas, trans people and refugees, have four reserved scholarships, reinforcing the university's commitment to social inclusion.
How does the selection process work?
The selection will be based on the analysis of documents submitted in the application form. It is necessary to attach all documentation that proves eligibility for the chosen vacancy modality.
Candidates who are not awarded scholarships may apply for paid places, with monthly fees that vary according to the language:
- English, Spanish, German, French and Italian: R$550,00/semester;
- Kimbundu and Yorùbá: R$ 275,00/semester;
- Greek and Latin: R$ 180,00/semester.
Classes for all registrants will begin in the first semester of 2025.
