Rio de Janeiro Hosts International Seminar on Nuclear Energy
The XIV International Seminar on Nuclear Energy (SIEN) begins its activities in Rio de Janeiro, discussing the vital importance of nuclear power plants in combatting the use of fossil fuels. Experts from various fields will gather at the Society of Engineers and Architects of Rio de Janeiro (SEAERJ), in the Glória neighborhood, to debate faster and more cost-effective nuclear constructions.
This event, taking place from November 21 to 23, aims to clarify doubts and combat prejudice regarding nuclear energy, considered a crucial ally in the pursuit of sustainable energy sources. Simultaneously, the VI ENCOM (Nuclear Sector Communication Meeting) will also be held, followed by a technical visit to the Angra dos Reis Nuclear Power Plant.
The Revolution of Small Modular Reactors
Paulo Maurício Senra, a researcher from GESEL/UFRJ, will highlight the role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) on the first day of the seminar. SMRs represent a significant shift in the design of nuclear plants, offering modular solutions manufactured on assembly lines. This can result in substantial reductions in costs and construction time compared to traditional plants, in addition to being non-emitting sources of greenhouse gases.

Oil plummets more than 10% and the market turns upside down after Iran opens Hormuz and eases fears about the main route in the Gulf.
Important Debates and Renowned Speakers
The seminar will feature discussions on various aspects of nuclear energy. Orpet Peixoto, president of INSC, will discuss the global landscape of nuclear energy. John Forman from J. Forman Consulting will moderate a debate on construction costs and timelines, with participation from specialists from Eletronuclear and EPE.
Niágara Rodrigues from UFF will discuss safety, waste management, and public acceptance of SMRs. The event opening will feature Luís Fernando Paroli, CEO of ENBPAR.
Future of Nuclear Energy in Brazil
The second day of the seminar will focus on the future of Angra 3 and Angra 4, with participation from João Pedro Leal of SEENEMAR/RJ and Marcelo Gomes from Eletronuclear. Additionally, the support of the national industry for the Brazilian Nuclear Program will be a key topic, featuring leaders from ABIMAQ and ABEMI.
The last day of the event will question whether there has been progress in communication with society about the nuclear sector. Bernardo Mendes Barata from ABEN and other experts will discuss alternatives for disseminating knowledge in nuclear sciences, as well as safety and transparency in the sector.
The SIEN will take place in person and will also be streamed online, with simultaneous translation, allowing for a global reach. Registration will be available on the first day of the event, providing a unique opportunity for professionals and enthusiasts in the field of nuclear energy to update themselves and contribute to the debate on a more sustainable future less dependent on fossil fuels.
