Natural Gas Vehicles Provide Over 40% Savings and Reduce Environmental Impact
The recent increase in traditional fuel prices – gasoline, diesel, and ethanol – and the reduction in the tariff for natural gas vehicles (NGV) starting June 10, determined by ARSESP (Public Services Regulatory Agency of the State of São Paulo), consolidate NGV as the most advantageous choice for drivers. Comgás, the largest distributor of piped natural gas in Latin America, highlights that savings in light vehicles can exceed 40% compared to the use of other fuels, depending on the region. Furthermore, NGV produces lower pollutant emissions compared to gasoline and diesel.
Thiago Borer, NGV Sales Manager at Comgás, states: “For passenger vehicles and heavy fleets, NGV is the most assertive choice for those who want to save money and reduce environmental impact. Our society demands less polluting energy sources that are easy to install and maintain, like NGV, which is currently available at more than 240 stations supplied by Comgás in São Paulo.”
Benefits of NGV in Passenger Vehicles
The expert also emphasizes the low risk of NGV supply shortages, as distribution is done through underground pipelines, unlike other fossil fuels, which are mostly imported and delivered by trucks. The installation of the NGV kit in any vehicle takes between 8 and 12 hours.

In passenger vehicles, NGV achieves double the performance of ethanol, according to information from Comgás. For example, cars powered by NGV can average 14 kilometers per cubic meter, while ethanol-powered vehicles travel 7 kilometers per liter, and gasoline vehicles average 10 kilometers per liter.
Savings for Heavy Fleets
In a direct comparison between the performances of NGV and diesel, considering average prices, the savings from NGV exceed 15% per kilometer traveled. In recent years, Comgás has encouraged the creation of fueling stations in transportation companies and industries, further reducing costs. In practice, logistics companies that install their own fueling stations can achieve savings of between 30% to 40% compared to diesel sold at conventional stations.
In addition to economic benefits, NGV offers significant environmental advantages. Besides the possibility of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%, it can decrease local pollutant generation and particulate matter by up to 90%. “With the use of natural gas vehicles, the ‘black smoke’ emitted by conventional truck engines is almost eliminated, reducing a range of respiratory diseases. Moreover, NGV generates less noise and vibration, providing a smoother driving experience,” concludes Thiago Borer.
