New Technology From Swedish Startup Modvion Provides Clean Energy for Hundreds of Homes and Offers an Ecological Solution With Positive Environmental Impact

The largest wooden wind turbine in the world is already operational in Sweden, showing the world a new way to generate sustainable energy. Created by startup Modvion, this turbine not only symbolizes a technological advancement but also brings important ecological benefits. With 105 meters in height and a capacity of 2 megawatts (MW), the turbine is located near the city of Skara, northeast of Gothenburg, and already supplies electricity to about 400 homes. Varberg Energi, the company responsible for electricity generation and distribution in the region, was the first to adopt this pioneering technology, according to the website De Olho na Engenharia.

The construction of the laminated wood turbine represents a significant step in the energy sector, prioritizing sustainability and reducing environmental impacts. The tower structure, made up of 144 layers of laminated, sustainable spruce wood, stands out for its lightness and strength, providing a distinct advantage over traditional steel and concrete towers.

Modular Structure and Ecological Advantages

One of the differentiating factors of the turbine is its modular structure, which allows for practical transportation of the parts on regular highways. This feature facilitates logistics and reduces installation costs, a decisive factor for expanding the use of wooden turbines in various locations. Additionally, the use of wood in construction makes this tower lighter than traditional ones, saving resources at various stages of the installation process.

Another positive aspect is that the turbine is carbon negative. That is, over its lifetime, the wood in the structure is able to capture and store carbon from the atmosphere, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases. This feature offers a distinct solution, as conventional turbines do not have this carbon absorption capability. Thus, Modvion positions itself at the forefront of wind energy, with an innovative technology that brings economic and ecological benefits.

Recycling and Sustainable Use of Wood

When the wind turbine reaches the end of its useful life, the wood from its structure can be recycled. This means that, instead of being discarded, the wood is reused in beams and other high-strength structures in civil construction. This cycle of repurposing further enhances the healthy benefits of this technology.

Modvion has thought of every detail to maximize the sustainability of the project. Choosing wood as the main building material is not only a strategy to reduce the carbon footprint, but also a way to make wind energy more accessible and adaptable to the environment. With a recyclable approach, the wooden wind turbine represents an economic and sustainable alternative for the future of clean energy generation.

Expansion and Partnerships for Mass Production

This project marks the first collaboration between Modvion and Vestas, a Danish giant in the wind sector and a shareholder of the startup since 2021. Vestas produced a 2 MW turbine installed in the tower, contributing its expertise to ensure the efficient operation of the structure. The partnership between the two companies promises to bring great advances to the sector, with plans for mass production of 100 new wooden turbines per year starting in 2027.

This expansion has the potential to revolutionize the wind energy market, offering a more sustainable and economically viable alternative for countries seeking to reduce dependence on polluting energy sources. According to Modvion, wooden tower technology can significantly reduce production and installation costs, as the material is lighter and easier to handle. Wood is also a renewable raw material, unlike steel and concrete, which helps to lessen the environmental impact of the sector.
