YouTube will expand Picture-in-Picture for non-Premium users outside the United States in the coming months, allowing them to watch long videos that are not music in a movable window on iPhone, iPad, and Android, while Premium subscribers maintain broader access to the feature.
YouTube will release the Picture-in-Picture feature for free to iPhone users outside the United States, expanding access to the PiP mode on iPhone and iPad to more people around the world. The change was announced by the platform and will be implemented globally in the coming months.
With the expansion, Picture-in-Picture will no longer be restricted to users in the US and Premium subscribers. Non-Premium users worldwide will be able to use the feature for long content that is not music on iOS and Android.
YouTube expands Picture-in-Picture globally
The Picture-in-Picture mode allows the video to be minimized into a small player, keeping playback active while other apps are used. The floating window can be moved anywhere on the screen, providing more flexibility during the use of a phone or tablet.

To activate PiP, the user must swipe up and exit the YouTube app. The video continues to play in a small window, without requiring the app to remain open in full screen.
Feature will be free for non-Premium users
The main change affects non-Premium users outside the United States, who will gain access to PiP for long videos that are not music. This functionality is already available in the US and for Premium subscribers globally.
Therefore, there will be no change for users who already use the feature under these conditions. The expansion only broadens the reach of Picture-in-Picture to more people in other countries.
Premium maintains broader access to PiP
Premium Lite members will continue to use PiP for long content that is not music. Premium subscribers will still have access to the feature for both musical and non-musical content.
The changes to YouTube’s Picture-in-Picture will be implemented in the coming months. As a result, the feature will reach more iPhone, iPad, and Android users in different regions of the world.
