Recordings released by British police reveal the precision of a 12-year-old son in driving a vehicle and calling for help after his mother fainted on the road.
A call made to the UK emergency services caught the attention of authorities due to the calmness and maturity demonstrated by Zac Howells, just 12 years old. On December 14, 2025, the boy contacted the rescue center after taking control of a moving car when his mother, Nicola, 37, fainted at the wheel during a trip. Even in the face of the extreme situation, the son managed to remain calm, follow the operators’ instructions, and provide accurate information for the rescue.
What happened on the highway?
The incident occurred on the A40 highway, near the border between England and Wales. Mother and son were traveling to Birmingham, where they intended to visit a Christmas market, when Nicola suffered a sudden collapse while driving.
The vehicle was traveling at about 60 miles per hour (approximately 95 km/h) when the driver lost consciousness. The situation became even more dangerous because Nicola’s foot remained pressing the accelerator, causing the car to gain speed without any control.

How did Zac manage to stop the vehicle?
Upon realizing what was happening, Zac took the wheel and assumed control of the car, even without the legal age to drive.

Son offers support to mother after fainting
After the car was immobilized, the son turned his attention to his mother. When Nicola partially regained consciousness, the boy remained by her side, holding her hands and asking her to breathe calmly while they awaited the arrival of emergency teams.
The clarity of the information provided by him also helped the rescuers quickly locate the vehicle, which was stopped in an area near the border between the two countries.
The recording of the call released by the authorities shows Zac describing the situation with organization and precision, even under strong emotional pressure. The professionals responsible for the service highlighted the maturity demonstrated by the boy throughout the conversation, considered fundamental for the success of the rescue operation.
Official recognition for bravery
The young man’s attitude ended up being officially recognized by the local security forces. Zac received the Chief Constable’s Commendation, awarded to people who demonstrate courage and exemplary behavior in emergency situations.
The ceremony was held in the city of Worcester, where the student was honored by police officers, rescuers, and call center operators.
