Toyota 2.0 Dual VVT-i, Honda 1.8 i-VTEC and Chevrolet 1.4 Family II Stand Out for Durability and Predictable Maintenance
When it comes to the most reliable engines in the Brazilian market, three options stand out among experts and consumers: the Toyota 2.0 Dual VVT-i, the Honda 1.8 i-VTEC, and the Chevrolet 1.4 Family II. These engines are recognized for high durability, low incidence of serious failures, and maintenance costs within expectations, even after many years of use.
More than power or sophistication, these engines deliver mechanical robustness and daily reliability, essential characteristics in a country where the car is still the main means of transport for millions of people.
Toyota 2.0 16V Dual VVT-i — Reliability in Sedans and SUVs
The Toyota 2.0 Dual VVT-i powers the Corolla (2015 to 2019, XEi and Altis versions) and the aspirated RAV4 until 2019. It is a 2.0 aspirated engine with dual variable timing, designed to balance performance and efficiency.

Harley-Davidson created an entry-level motorcycle that seems impossible for those who only know the brand’s big bikes: the X440 uses a 440 cc single-cylinder engine, delivers 27 hp, 38 Nm, a declared fuel consumption of 35 km/l, and showcases a small, rational, and much more accessible Harley in India.

GAC Aion UT lands in Brazil for R$ 135,990 as the most affordable electric car in the country with over 200 hp, surpasses BYD Dolphin in size, features a 360 camera, and offers up to 310 km of range to challenge Chinese rivals.

Mitsubishi confirms the triumphant return of a car beloved by Brazilians that was discontinued after almost 40 years, based on the Triton, 4×4, and targets rival Toyota Land Cruiser in a plan of 13 SUVs.
According to data from Inmetro, the 2019 Corolla CVT achieves 12.6 km/l on the highway with gasoline, in addition to providing predictable maintenance and an extensive assistance network. Many owners report exceeding 300,000 km without major interventions, reinforcing its reputation as an almost “unbreakable” engine.
The point of attention is the oil change every 10,000 km, which must be strictly followed. In the RAV4, the cost of parts is higher, but reliability remains a differential.
Honda 1.8 i-VTEC — Smoothness and Long Lifespan
The Honda 1.8 i-VTEC was present in the Civic (2007–2016) and HR-V (2015–2021). It is a four-cylinder aspirated engine that combines smoother operation with great mechanical resistance.
In the 2019 HR-V, for instance, the engine offers consumption of up to 12.1 km/l on the highway with gasoline, according to Inmetro. With preventive maintenance, it is not uncommon to find units with over 350,000 km still in good condition.
The CVT transmission that accompanies this engine in the HR-V requires more attention: the fluid needs to be changed every 40,000 km to avoid premature wear. Even so, the set is considered one of the most balanced in the national market.
Chevrolet 1.4 Family II — Simplicity and Low Cost
The Chevrolet 1.4 Family II was used in entry-level models such as Onix, Prisma, Celta, and Classic until 2019. Despite being simple, it is considered one of the most reliable engines in the Brazilian market, precisely because of its robustness.
With timing chain instead of a timing belt, it reduces maintenance costs. The consumption in the 2016 Onix 1.4 manual reaches 15.3 km/l on the highway with gasoline, according to Inmetro, one of the strong points of the package.
On the other hand, performance is only average and sound insulation does not keep up with more modern rivals. Still, the combination of low parts cost and long durability keeps it a reference in economy and resilience.
Among the most reliable engines in the Brazilian market, each one serves a distinct profile. The Toyota 2.0 Dual VVT-i is ideal for those seeking maximum reliability with liquidity in the used market. The Honda 1.8 i-VTEC offers durability combined with balanced performance in medium sedans and SUVs. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet 1.4 Family II is the choice for those who value simplicity, low cost, and accessible maintenance.
