Fixed connection over Guaratuba Bay changes a routine marked by queues, ferries, and unpredictable travel on the coast of Paraná, with a structure of 1.24 kilometers, million-dollar investment, and direct impact on mobility between Guaratuba and Matinhos.

Inaugurated on May 1, 2026, the Guaratuba Bridge began to connect Guaratuba and Matinhos through a fixed connection over Guaratuba Bay, changing the crossing used by residents, students, workers, and tourists on the coast of Paraná.

Under the coordination of the Paraná Department of Roads and Highways, DER/PR, the structure received an investment of about R$ 400 million from the Government of Paraná and ended the daily dependence on the ferry boat in this section.

With more than 1,240 meters in length, the project was designed with four traffic lanes, safety lanes, sidewalks, a bike path, and guardrails, as well as land accesses on both sides of the bay.

Combined with the accesses, the road complex exceeds 3 kilometers and replaces the ferry boat crossing in one of the busiest connections on the Paraná coast, especially during holidays, vacations, and peak season.

Crossing between Guaratuba and Matinhos became faster

In practice, the main change is in the travel time between the municipalities, as the crossing that used to take 20 to 30 minutes on normal days now takes about two minutes.

According to the Government of Paraná, the new connection brought more predictability for those crossing the bay daily, especially in routes related to work, study, public services, medical care, and goods circulation.

During periods of higher traffic, the wait for the ferries could be even longer, as the flow of vehicles increased and the operation depended on the boarding and disembarking capacity of the waterway system.

With the bridge in operation, drivers no longer have to wait in line to access the ferry boat, while travel now occurs continuously via the new road structure.

Named Victory Bridge, the project connects the central and port region of Guaratuba to the side of Matinhos, enhancing the integration between two strategic municipalities for the economy and tourism of the coast.

Guaratuba Bridge was awaited for more than 40 years

Presented by the state government as a demand awaited for more than four decades, the Guaratuba Bridge came off the drawing board after stages of licensing, contracting, execution of foundations, assembly of the cable-stayed section, and completion of the accesses.

The effective construction phase began on April 30, 2024, and progressed until the delivery of the structure in 2026, during which the construction site mobilized work fronts on both shores of Guaratuba Bay.

Responsible for the execution, the Nova Ponte Consortium won the public bidding and conducted the work under the coordination of DER/PR and the Infrastructure and Logistics Secretariat of Paraná.

The Água e Terra Institute also participated in the process, the body responsible for the necessary environmental licenses for the installation and operation of the road connection over the bay.

Before the delivery, the travel between Guaratuba and Matinhos depended on the ferry boat, a model that limited the predictability of the trip and concentrated bottlenecks during peak circulation times.

Now, the fixed connection reduces this dependency and reorganizes mobility in an area considered strategic for tourism, services, commerce, and the daily movement of residents.

Structure has cable-stayed section and road accesses

With a 320-meter cable-stayed section, the bridge was designed to allow navigation in Guaratuba Bay, maintaining a free span and height compatible with the passage of vessels.

Besides the main lane, the project includes road solutions at the accesses to distribute vehicle flow at both ends and connect the new structure to the existing network.

The lane has four traffic lanes, two in each direction, and also offers spaces for pedestrians and cyclists, which extends its function beyond the passage of automobiles.

With this design, the bridge functions as a fixed corridor for motorized and non-motorized travel between the two sides of the bay, with a direct impact on regional circulation.

At the accesses, the project included interventions on sections of PR-412 and urban adaptations on the shores of Guaratuba and Matinhos, a necessary step to organize the arrival and departure of vehicles.

These fronts were executed to prevent the new crossing from merely transferring bottlenecks to local roads, especially during periods when the coast receives a higher volume of visitors.

Expected impact on the economy of Paraná’s coast

In addition to shortening the commute, the Guaratuba Bridge tends to influence tourism, commerce, services, and the real estate market on the Paraná coast by making circulation between municipalities faster and more predictable.

The reduction in crossing time facilitates visitor travel, improves worker circulation, and provides more regularity to the transportation of goods, an important factor for economic activities that depend on timing and logistics.

In state planning, the project is part of a broader cycle of infrastructure investments on the coast, alongside road and urban interventions designed to absorb the expected increase in vehicle flow.

In this context, the bridge functions as a regional connection axis, as it brings closer areas of residence, work, study, commerce, and services that were previously separated by the operational dependence on ferries.

For those who live in one city and need to study, work, or seek services in another, the fixed connection changes the organization of daily routines and reduces the margin for delays in daily commitments.

The school community also now benefits from more predictable routes, according to the state government, since the crossing no longer depends on the boarding and disembarking pace of the ferry boat.

End of waiting for ferries changes local routine

Among the most felt effects by users is the elimination of the waiting stage for boarding, which previously required planning around schedules, demand, and the queue formed at the ferry boat access.

Even on normal days, crossing by ferry added uncertainty to the commute, while holidays, vacations, and peak seasons increased the risk of delays for residents, tourists, and service providers.

With the bridge, activities that depend on timing, such as classes, medical appointments, work commitments, and short trips, now have a more direct route between Guaratuba and Matinhos.

In a region marked by strong seasonal movement, predictability tends to weigh more precisely in the months of higher tourist presence, when the coast receives a significant increase in vehicle flow.

With 1.24 kilometers in length and an investment close to R$ 400 million, the Guaratuba Bridge has established a new route between two central municipalities on the Paraná coast.

The project ended the daily dependence on the ferry boat for crossing the bay and became part of Paraná’s permanent mobility infrastructure.
