Santa Catarina Highway Receives Unprecedented Pavement Technology Using Polymer, Increasing Asphalt Resistance and Potentially Inspiring New Standards for Roads in the Country.

The highway SC-443, located in southern Santa Catarina and responsible for connecting Morro da Fumaça to Criciúma, was reopened to traffic after the completion of a revitalization process considered unprecedented in the region.

The 13-kilometer stretch was entirely reconstructed with an innovative technology based on the application of polymer to the asphalt mixture.

This technique, hitherto unprecedented in the state, provides waterproofing to the asphalt, significantly reducing water infiltration and increasing the durability of the pavement, potentially preserving the conditions of Brazilian highways for decades.

The implementation of the technology was announced this Saturday (26), during the ceremony for the delivery of the work, which is part of the Good Road program, considered the largest highway recovery plan in the history of Santa Catarina.

The total investment in the requalification of SC-443 reached R$ 6.3 million, including complete horizontal and vertical signaling, essential to ensure greater safety and comfort for drivers.

Unprecedented Technology in Paving

According to state government information, the main advantage of the new method lies in the extra resistance of the pavement, making the roads less susceptible to damage caused by rain and sudden temperature changes.

By waterproofing the asphalt, the polymer prevents water infiltration that compromises the highway’s foundation, a factor that typically accelerates the deterioration of traditional pavement.

The importance of revitalizing SC-443 for the region’s development was emphasized during the ceremony by the mayor of Morro da Fumaça, Eduardo Sartor Guollo.

For him, the work directly impacts mobility and the flow of local production, facilitating the transit of entrepreneurs, rural producers, and other drivers who use the highway daily.

“The revitalization of SC-443 is of utmost importance because it gives us more opportunities, eases the flow of our entrepreneurs’ production and our agricultural output,” declared the mayor.

Good Road Program and Regional Impact

Launched in August 2023, the Good Road program anticipates investments of R$ 3.5 billion for the recovery and improvement of the state highway network in Santa Catarina.

According to data from the Department of Infrastructure of Santa Catarina, when the current government took office, approximately 73% of state highways were in regular or poor condition.

After implementing the program, the situation has improved considerably, with 87% of the southern state’s highways already classified as excellent or good by July 2025.

The reopening of SC-443 is especially symbolic for the local population, who had been waiting for the work for decades.

Governor Jorginho Mello, present at the delivery event, emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure to ensure economic development and road safety.

According to him, the Good Road program was created precisely to transform the reality of state roads and prepare Santa Catarina for the future.

“When we took over the government, we found 73% of the state highways in regular or terrible condition. The Good Road program came to change this reality. Here in the South, for example, we are already at 87% of highways being considered excellent or good,” emphasized the governor.

Innovation and Benefits for the Economy

Besides the direct benefit to drivers, the work contributes to the enhancement of productive regions in Santa Catarina, which depend on road infrastructure to transport goods and agricultural supplies.

The Deputy Secretary of State for Infrastructure and Mobility, Ricardo Grando, emphasized that investments in technology and innovation are essential to ensure a modern road network that meets the state’s needs.

For Grando, “a good road represents dignity for people and development for our state. Investing in infrastructure is preparing Santa Catarina for the future.”

The use of polymer in paving, already established in some European countries and in states like São Paulo, is likely to gain ground in infrastructure projects in Brazil, given the proven benefits concerning durability, sustainability, and reduction of costs with frequent maintenance.

Transportation engineering technicians highlight that the method can even inspire new guidelines for highway projects in other Brazilian regions facing similar challenges with premature wear of highways.

New Standard for Brazilian Roads

Currently, Santa Catarina has one of the largest extents of state highways in the country, totaling about 6,000 kilometers of roads under state government management.

The maintenance and modernization of these sections are considered strategic to boost tourism, agriculture, and regional industry.

The state’s own productive sector evaluates that the reduction of accidents and shorter travel time are direct gains that strengthen local competitiveness.

Another relevant aspect of the new asphalt is its contribution to road safety.

With better-marked lanes and more resistant pavement, the risk of accidents tends to decrease, benefiting both those who use the highway for work and tourists traveling through southern Santa Catarina.

Do you believe that the widespread adoption of this technology can definitively transform the quality of roads throughout Brazil?
