Founded in 1853, Bohemia is the oldest brewery in Brazil. Born in Petrópolis with German influences, it has crossed centuries and today keeps alive the tradition of artisanal production in its historical museum

Brazil ranks third in the world beer consumption ranking, according to Japan’s Kirin Holdings. This cultural relationship with the drink inevitably involves the trajectory of historic brands, such as Cervejaria Bohemia — the oldest in the country, founded 172 years ago in Rio de Janeiro.

Origin in Petrópolis and German Roots

Bohemia was born in 1853, in the city of Petrópolis (RJ), envisioned by the German Henrique Leiden. Five years later, he passed the command to his heir, Henrique Kremer.

Initially called Imperial Fábrica de Cerveja Nacional, the company only adopted the name Bohemia in 1898, consolidating itself as a pioneer in the national market.

According to the company itself, Brazil had known beer since 1808, when the Portuguese Royal Family arrived in the country. However, until the end of the 19th century, production was completely artisanal.

Artisanal Production and National Ingredients

The scarcity of imported ingredients, such as barley and hops — coming from Germany and Austria — forced the first manufacturers to resort to locally produced cereals, such as rice, corn, and wheat.

This adaptation was essential for the development of a Brazilian style of manufacturing, which combined flavor, creativity, and necessity.

Among Bohemia’s early creations was the current Bohemia Puro Malte, made with imported malt and hops and based on an original recipe from the city of Pilsen, in the Czech Republic.

Merger of Giants and the Birth of AmBev

The history of Bohemia is also intertwined with other major brands. In 1888, Cia. Cervejaria Brahma and Cia. Antarctica Paulista were established. Decades later, in 1961, Antarctica acquired Bohemia, uniting two powerhouses in the sector.

In 1999, a new turning point occurred: the merger between Brahma and Antarctica gave rise to AmBev (Companhia de Bebidas das Américas), a group that now controls Bohemia.

Bohemia Today: Tradition and Experience

Currently, the original factory in Petrópolis has ceased large-scale operations. The historical space has been transformed into a museum and visitor center, with tickets ranging from R$ 22 to R$ 125.

The site also houses a nano brewery, where visitors can follow the artisanal production process and closely experience the history of the drink that has shaped the palate of generations of Brazilians.

Bohemia Continues to Please Brazilians

Even after more than a century and a half since its founding, Bohemia still holds a special place in the hearts — and glasses — of Brazilians.

Present at the tables of bars, barbecues, and family gatherings, the brand keeps alive the essence of national brewing tradition, while also engaging with modern times.

Under the management of Ambev, Bohemia invests in technology, quality, and innovation, preserving the classic flavor that made it famous.

The current line, with labels such as Bohemia Puro Malte and Hoppy Lager, shows that it is possible to unite history and modernity without losing authenticity.

Each bottle still carries the pioneering spirit of the factory in Petrópolis, where everything began in 1853.

In addition to quality, there is also the emotional value. For many consumers, Bohemia represents memories, celebrations, and a link to the past.

This blend of tradition and renewal explains why, even in the face of so many options on the market, the oldest beer in Brazil continues to win over new generations.

With its balanced flavor and historical legacy, Bohemia stands strong — proving that time, when well spent, only enhances what was born special.

Sou de Petrópolis. Realmente já foi melhor, mas para nós petropolitanos o conteúdo afetivo é muito forte. Só de olhar o rótulo já vêm tantas lembranças maravilhosas!
Salve a Bohemia.
Que nunca nos falte a nós petropolitanos; e a todos que apreciam cerveja!
