The Labor Shortage in 2025 Led the Sector Employing About 500 Thousand People to Invest in Hiring Older People Outside the Market. Businessmen Highlight That the Challenge Grows Even with Forecast of Economic Advancement in the Year
The difficulty in hiring workers has returned to the spotlight at Superminas 2025, held at Expominas in Belo Horizonte. The topic gained weight because it is no longer restricted to small or medium networks. The labor shortage affects companies of all sizes at a time when foot traffic in physical stores remains high.
The event organizers estimate that this year’s edition will generate about R$ 3 billion in business by the closing, scheduled for Thursday. This volume reinforces the importance of the supermarket retail sector to the economy and, at the same time, highlights the growing concern about the lack of available professionals.
Businessmen Point to Record Difficulty in Filling Vacancies
According to a survey by the Minas Gerais Supermarkets Association, 90.6% of businessmen consider hiring employees the biggest bottleneck of 2025. The president of the entity, Alexandre Poni, states that consumption remains strong, but supermarkets face increasingly larger obstacles to forming complete teams, especially on weekends.

More than 3,900 Brazilian municipalities are unable to pay their own bills, and yet two city halls located just 700 meters apart continue to operate separately, each with a full structure.
The response found by the sector has been to invest in workers over 50 years old who are outside the market. Many retirees have come to see supermarkets as a real chance to return to professional activity or supplement their income, while companies value the more experienced and stable profile of this group.
According to Poni, the reception has been positive. He emphasizes that there is room for those looking to resume a work routine, especially in operational and customer service roles. For employers, the return of this demographic helps to reduce turnover and brings more predictability to the schedules.
Supermarkets Expand Hirings and Project Growth Above the National Average
The supermarket retail sector in Minas Gerais currently has 47,600 active stores and directly employs about 500,000 people. Despite the challenges, the Minas Gerais Supermarkets Association projects that 2025 will end with a growth of 3.3%, performance better than the national average, estimated at 2.7%.
Meanwhile, Superminas 2025 serves as a showcase for trends, technologies, and solutions that should shape the future of the segment. There are over 600 exhibitors distributed throughout the halls and an agenda of 70 lectures on management, consumption, innovation, and strategies to tackle the labor shortage.
Among all the topics discussed, the lack of workers continues to be the most pressing issue among industry representatives. For the executives present, the adoption of more experienced professionals is just one of the possible alternatives in a scenario that requires adaptation, creativity, and new ways to attract talent to the retail sector.
