Revolutionary Solution Promises Efficiency And Safety In Fuel Transportation
In a strategic move that promises to redefine energy transportation standards, Honeywell has announced a collaboration with ENEOS, a giant in the Japanese energy sector, to implement pioneering technology in liquid hydrogen transport. This advancement will allow the use of existing infrastructure to move and store fuel more effectively and safely, marking a milestone on the path to cleaner and more sustainable economies.
Honeywell’s innovative solution, based on liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) technology, is the first of its kind developed for large-scale commercial application. This technology not only facilitates the transportation of clean hydrogen over long distances but also meets the growing demands for safe fuels across various sectors, leveraging the existing refining infrastructure.
The Technology Behind The Innovation
The innovative process introduced by Honeywell involves the chemical combination of hydrogen in a liquid carrier form, methylcyclohexane (MCH), through the Honeywell Toluene Hydrogenation process. This approach not only makes transportation more practical but also compatible with the transportation and storage infrastructure already available. At the destination, the Honeywell MCH Dehydrogenation process recovers hydrogen for use, while toluene can be reused in subsequent cycles, optimizing the efficiency and sustainability of the process.

A common practice in traffic can be costly: using the hazard lights incorrectly can result in fines, points on your driver’s license, and even towing of the vehicle.
The collaboration between Honeywell and ENEOS is not new, but this specific hydrogen transport project stands out as a prominent example of joint innovation. With hydrogen being an essential component for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the ability to transport it effectively and safely is critical. So far, conventional methods of hydrogen transport face challenges due to its low density and flammable nature, requiring additional infrastructure for liquefaction or the use of chemical carriers like ammonia.
Honeywell At The Forefront Of The Energy Transition
Honeywell, a company with a global presence across various sectors, positions itself at the forefront of strategic megatrends, including automation, future aviation, and energy transition. Supported by the Honeywell Accelerator operating system and the Honeywell Connected Enterprise platform, the company is dedicated to tackling the world’s most complex challenges, offering innovative solutions that promote a smarter, safer, and more sustainable future.
This project with ENEOS reflects Honeywell’s commitment to driving the transition to a low-carbon economy by providing solutions that overcome the barriers of hydrogen transportation. José Fernandes, President of Honeywell for Latin America and Vice President of the Energy and Sustainability Solutions (ESS) area, emphasizes the importance of this advancement as a more economical and efficient means of meeting international fuel demand, playing a crucial role in diversifying the global energy mix.
In summary, the partnership between Honeywell and ENEOS in the development of liquid hydrogen transportation technologies is a significant step towards a more sustainable energy future. Through innovation and the use of existing infrastructures, both industry giants are not only addressing current needs for safety and energy efficiency but also paving the way for future generations to explore clean energy sources more feasibly.
