Installed in Hong Kong, China, the Central-Mid Levels Escalator is more than a means of transport: it is a true urban icon that connects streets, neighborhoods, and the history of one of the most dense cities on the planet.

When we think of escalators, the most common image is of systems installed in malls, subway stations, or airports. But the largest escalator in the world goes far beyond that. Located in Hong Kong, the structure named Central-Mid Levels Escalator is considered the largest escalator system in the world — and for good reasons. The investment was high — more than six times the initial budget — but the result exceeded expectations.

How Does the Largest Escalator System in the World Work?

Contrary to what the term might suggest, the Central-Mid Levels Escalator is not a single linear escalator of 800 meters, but rather a set of escalators and walkways that function together. All are one-way reversible, meaning that, depending on the time of day, they either go up or down.

The operation follows a logic designed to meet the residents’ routines:

  • From 6 AM to 10 AM: direction of descent, favoring the commute to work and school.
  • From 10 AM to midnight: direction of ascent, facilitating the return home.

The complete journey takes about 20 minutes on foot — although it is possible to use it only in parts. The system allows entry and exit at various points, passing through narrow streets, restaurants, shops, and even tourist attractions.

The Escalator with 130 Meters: The Longest Section Impresses Visitors

Within the Central-Mid Levels system, the longest continuous section is 130 meters long, making it one of the longest segments of urban escalator in the world. For those ascending this segment, the feeling is akin to being on a “vertical moving walkway” that winds through alleys and historical buildings of Hong Kong.

The ascent takes nearly 3 minutes, depending on speed and the presence of stationary pedestrians. Along the way, it is possible to see murals, graffiti, traditional restaurants, and even small markets. The route is also completely covered, providing protection against rain and excessive heat.

A Positive Impact on Urban Mobility

The largest escalator in the world was initially criticized for its high cost, but over time it proved to be an effective solution for urban mobility in sloped areas. According to the Hong Kong Transport Department, about 78,000 trips are made every day by the system.

This impressive number reflects the essential role of the structure in the daily lives of residents. In addition to facilitating movement, the system:

  • Reduces pollution emissions by encouraging walking instead of vehicle use.
  • Decongests local traffic, especially during rush hour.
  • Stimulates commerce by linking commercial and residential zones.

Designed with international consultancy, the Central-Mid Levels system is also a landmark of functional urbanism. According to Remo Riva, the architect who participated in the project, the biggest challenge was to adapt the structure to the natural slope of the city without negatively impacting the surroundings.

In addition to being an example of integration between mobility and urban landscape, the system was built with weather-resistant materials and automated maintenance equipment, ensuring its continuous operation throughout the year.

Ascending the largest escalator in the world is more than just a commute: it is a cultural experience. Along the route, pedestrians pass through:

  • SoHo (South of Hollywood Road): one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Hong Kong, filled with bars and art galleries.
  • Peel Street and Elgin Street: streets that preserve colonial architecture and Chinese tradition.
  • Graham Street Market: one of the oldest open-air markets in the city.
